Which categories would be your strongest in a trivia contest? Which categories in “Jeopardy!” could you do a clean sweep on and show off your expertise on the subject? For me, I’d do well with Flintstone’s and Looney Tunes trivia and perhaps questions pertaining to 1980s heavy metal music.
I’d probably do pretty well in most pop culture Jeopardy categories, but my strongest would probably be:
Doctor Who
Movies
New York Mets
Early 70s rock music
This reminds me of a funny story. I am a typical geek…Like I know useless trivia, but I’m not really into pop culture. I tried out for College Jeopady! and I missed the qualifying by ONE question. That question was “Who’s the lead singer of the Smashing Pumpkins?” My mom knew it…ever since then, that’s become a family joke. When the Smashing Pumpkins broke up everyone in the family was teasing me that I didn’t have to remember that any more.
70s-80s sitcoms
One-hit wonders
The Beatles
NY Yankees
Movie musicals.
Nothing else even comes close.
90’s music, pop music in recent years, and The Simpsons.
That’s about it.
Brendon
I’d run the Bluegrass Music category in both the Jeopardy and Double Jeopardy rounds.
Horror movies.
The Simpsons.
South Park.
The Muppets.
Movies. A broad category, but I think I’m pretty strong.
Okay, now the ones I’m not as proud of:
The Bible. I went to a Catholic high school, okay?
Blondie. The group, not the comic strip. No, I’m not gay.
Friends
The Princess Bride
Sondheim musicals
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the series)
Bond, James Bond
Classic Rock
Classic TV
Star Trek
Shakespeare
Marvel Comics
The Whedonverse, chapter and verse.
Dungeons and Dragons. I’ve been playing since 1984, and I eckon I’ve read something like 90% of everything published by TSR/WotC (although I’ve been falling behind in recent years0.
The work of writers George R.R. Martin and Guy Gavriel Kay.
Billy Joel. What can I say - I’m a fan.
Animation since the 80’s, but strongest in Futurama, Simpsons, and 80’s action cartoons that were just excuses to sell more toys (ie, Transformers, GI Joe, etc…)
Video Games
Star Wars (to a small extent)
Marvel Comics (about the same as Star Wars, though certain series (like X-Men) I know more about than others (like Ghost Rider.))
70s & 80s pop music
The novels of Stephen King
Kiddie lit
and Classic Rock
Definitely Buffy, the wider Whedonverse, and WB programming in general. I’m not proud of that last one. (I’m not ashamed either, but perhaps a bit sheepish. I’ve never seen a single episode of 7th Heaven, for whatever that’s worth!)
I seem to know an alarming amount of stuff about television shows and movies I’ve never actually seen. It’s like an osmosis thing.
Pop music from the 50s onward. Hip hop and rap would be my weakest categories, but I’m still fairly knowledgeable.
Disney movies/television shows, and all things Muppet.
Add to that
Classic Trek
Warner Bros Cartoons of the 50s and early 60s - particularly the Bugs/Daffy/Elmer combos
Billy Joel - up to Storm Front
Weird Al
Will we be asking ewach other questions for fun?
Musical theatre
Andrew Lloyd Webber
Legion of Super-Hero comics
I’ll take “Shows canceled by Fox in the 2000s” for $1000, Alex.
Great Og! How could I forget one of my best categories?
MAS*H (both the movie and the series)
Jeopardy! categories wherein I usually break the bank:
- The Ancient World
- Shakespeare
- Gilbert & Sullivan
- 80s Pop
- World War II
- Opera
One of my best categories in Jeopardy! is actually Potpourri. When I was on the quiz bowl team in high school and in college, my speciality was answering the weird questions that came out of left field.
