Popular history of England & Russia?

Anyone have any thoughts on a good book(s) on the history of England & Russia? Written for a general audience rather than a school text book?

I enjoyed The History of Russia. It gives a brief overview of Russia all the way from the first immigrants to the present day. Good read, but not captivating. Spends more time on latter-day Russia, particularly the USSR (for obvious reasons).
