Seriously, how is this hurting anyone but the residents who use(d) that website? They weren’t the ones who vote for the bill (okay, probably a few of them were ;)) & it’s not like many residents are going to protest & publicly state that they want the law repealed so that they can get their favorite porn site back.

Well, it is really just a “Your access to xHamster is blacked out in the state" but it does not rhyme. 
You laugh, but the industry is surprisingly monopolistic. I read somewhere that eight of the top ten pr0n sites are owned by the same company. XHamster is one of the two that are not. They presumably see their stance on this issue as raising their public profile outside of North Carolina.

It doesn’t necessarily have to be about economic punishment. There’s nothing wrong with a company stating publicly that it has a conscience and actually demonstrating a willingness to suffer financial consequences of its own in order to stay true to its own values. Sort of like how a bakery might choose to not make wedding cakes for homosexuals–they’ll not convince anyone to not be gay, but they’ll be right with their own beliefs.

In the pre-internet days I did some IT work for a major national phone sex company. They had lots of different trade styles. Some of which were pretty far out there by the standards of the era.
Their customer base skewed very heavily away from the liberal coasts and very heavily towards the conservative Bible Belt.
I once did some political work with a retired madam, and we talked a little about her business.
She mentioned that a lot was related to big Conventions in town, and the type of Convention affected the amount of business. She said the conservative, fundamentalist ones produced the most customers. Billy Graham events were a bonanza! But she was quite down on the liberal political events : "too damn many liberal chicks just giving it away!"
No, it proves pornography is popular in the South. There’s no breakdown of what kind of Southerners like pornography, or how religious they are.
