Porno, Porno, Porno!!

Would somebody please explain to me why it is I can plug innocent keywords like:

“Spider” “arachnid” “web” “spin” “webbing”

…into my preferred search engine and still get referred to DOZENS of porno sites!? Is there some kind of creepy arachnophiliac underground I don’t know about? Do these sleezeballs have servers that will respond to any queary whatsoever?

Well, those porn site webmasters put seemingly innocent words into their on their pages so the webcrawlers will display the link everytime someone searches for those words, such as the words you listed (if you want to see what I mean, go to one of those sites. Often if you scroll down, you will find what looks like a lot of blank space. There is where they usually put as many words as they can think of. Highlight the page and you should see the words if they dont seem to be there).

I can’t count how many times I have been searching for things like ‘Japanese culture’ and the links displayed were porn links.

Inky, what search engine are you using?!? I plugged your search terms in Lycos, Hot.Bot, Excite, Netscape, Yahoo! and AOL, and I did not find any porn at all! Not even on AOL! Needless to say, I was very dissapointed.

I was educated long after the discontinuation of flogging, and I have no problems with spelling or grammar.
This is because I’m not a moron.

I was just using those keywords as example, Cessandra. But nevertheless, they are pretty much the terms I was using (Wuz looking for “Brown Recluse Spider” if you were wondering).

Incidently, fun with AltaVista :

Keyword “Romance”…2,131,760

Keyword “Throbbing”…4,101,510

The verdict is in, romance IS dead…

Try Google. This search engine uses keyword searches but ranks and displays sites according to how many other important (heavily linked to) sites are linked to it.

The return display shows the pertinent snippet of text from the document in which your keyword(s) appear. I cannot ever remember getting unintentional (or at least extremely illogical) pornographic results from Google.

It has the added bonus of not being portal-based. No adverts, period.

Well, it’s good to know that the intentional and logical porn results come right through for ya, Nick!

I heard a soundbite on some radio show (WBBM, for you Chicagoites) that mentioned approximately 80% of the highly sought after buzzword “e-commerce” money was actually “adult entertainment dollars”. And you wonder why the government is so excited.

Doesn’t surprise me a bit. You almost can’t use a search engine without one of your hits being “XXX Viagra Barely Legal Sluts!”

lovelee

As long as we’re on this topic…
Has anyone ever stumbled onto a porn site, (like “Barely Legal Sluts” or “Latex-Wearing Lesbian Nurses” or whateverhaveyou), and then tried to leave with the “Back” button, only to have the site re-direct you to another site just like it? Does this practice have a name? Is it legal? It certainly isn’t ethical. Whenever this happens to me, I’m usually forced to hit my “Home” button, or manually type in the URL of a normal site to escape.

A co-worker of mine ended up at one accidentally and it took away his url bar and everything, so there was no back button or anyother way to get out, he had to shut his machine down to get rid of it.

Diceman: A couple of days after I got my computer (a year & a half ago), just for kicks, I decided to see what was out there in the way of porn, just for giggles. What you described is exactly what happened to me. Decided then and there if I ever wanted to see any porn again, I’d get it the old-fashioned way, from the video store.

The “trap” websites do their dirty work with JavaScript code. You can prevent yourself from getting stuck if you disable JavaScript in your browser. (No snide comments, please. I’m a programmer; I have legitimate reasons for knowing this kind of stuff.)

One time I got sent to a porno site & when I clicked to close that window, another one came up this went on for like ten freeking windows. Finally it gave up. IN that time just about any & every type of porno came up on the screen.

For searching, try www.ask.com it does many search engines & weighs word content better.

Another way is for a web site to have a few pages with just about every word in the world on them. Add it to some search engines, then a month later, put porno with the same urls. yuck

Diceman - Try a plug-in like OnTrack… I downloaded for free from ZDNet. It prevents your browser from opening pop-up windows, and it also seems to have greatly reduced if not eliminated the redirects.
