Porsche Question

Sofa: What kinda car do you drive?

I’ve just recently got into tracking my 535, and believe me it’s quite quick on the track. Here are some mods…

-JC Computer Chip
-Bilstein HD Shocks
-Eibach Pro Sport Springs
-3.73 Rear end
-Lightned flywheel
-M5 Clutch
-Autosolutions adjustable shortshifter
-Sparco semi-racing belts
-750/540 Brake upgrade
-One crazy ass driver

With that combination I don’t have a problem keeping up with E36 M3’s on the track. Although, I’d still rather have an M3.

The 968 wasn’t just a re-bodied 944 any more than the 944 was a re-bodied 924. More accurately, it was yet another refinement in the 4-cylinder front-engined family. By the time Porsche started production on the 968, the ‘not-a-real-Porsche’ complaint wasn’t that much of a problem any longer, mostly due to the success, both commercially and in racing, of all the variants of the 944. The biggest reason that the 968 was discontinued was that it was a better handling car than the 911. That is, it was more neutral-steering, and it made gobs of power (especially for a 4-banger). If you took a both a 1993 968 and a 1993 911 right off the showroom floor, the 968 would have given the company flagship a real run for it’s money. Porsche couldn’t have the ‘entry level’ model running rings around the 911, so they discreetly dropped it.

Let’s face it…911s aren’t the best handling cars in the world for most drivers. My two most recent Porsches are an '86 911 Carrera (which was named specifically for the Carrera Panamericana, not just because it means ‘race’ in Spanish), and a '63 356B. I’d have to say that the 356 really handled better, without being the handful that the 911 is.

One last thing…the first car to be called a ‘Carrera’ was a 356, and was different in that it had roller bearings and a 4-cam motor. Again, gobs o’ power, but a bitch to tune.

You had to mention tuning. I can remember going to this German mechanic constantly for my 912. I’d tell him what it was doing. He’d listen to me with his eyes closed and after I got done he’d write one or two words on the paper.

Yeah Johnny LA a girl pilot and a member of the '99’s

Me? I drive a white Mazda Miata, stock.

What? It’s a long story, man.

I’ve been thinking of buying a helicopter, but I think the insurance is going to be a killer. (Still waiting to hear back from AOPA for the hull insurance figre.) I’ve started looking at used C-172s. As my Jeep is to the Porsche, the 172 is more practical than a heli.

I took a lesson in rotocraft. A friend just sold her helicoptors for just that reason. She owned a crop dusting company. Insurance made profit impossible. I own a Jeep Cherokee too, my son has it at college.

My husband is building a RV7A (airplane) and is going to put a Mazda rotary engine in it. The guy from the FAA said “They’re bulletproof” What do you think?

Don’t want to hijack the thread. Volkswagon and Porsche air cooled engines were once popular for homebuilders (aircraft) because of the light weight.
This thread is really making me think about the days when it was fun to drive.
