Portland area dog owners! Support Retired Racers!

(Permission requested and received from Tubadiva for this thread - Thanks!)

My wife and I work with a non-profit group here in the Portland area. Greyhound Pets of America - Northwest Chapter is a group dedicated to finding homes for retired racing greyhounds. These professional athletes have finished their racing careers and are ready to find a couch to spend the rest of their lives on.

As we are a non-profit, we spend a lot of time fundraising. The money we raise covers costs such as transportation, altering, shots, medical testing (thryroid, heartworm, etc.) and food.

We have a great event coming up that I’d like to invite you to!

The Bark at the Harvest Moon event will be held Saturday, Oct. 13th in Scappoose (details available on the link). Well behaved, large breed dogs are invited (on a leash please).
Events will include a

[li]Silent Auction (with donations from local sports teams, wineries, hotels etc.)[/li][li]Raffle[/li][li]Games (bobbing for hotdogs anyone?)[/li][/ul]

If you’re looking for a fun, family friendly event that includes the dog(s), this is for you. Please pass the word amongst your dog owning friends, or just people that like to have a good time with dogs.
All proceeds go directly to dogs, as we are all volunteers. If you have any questions about the event, or greyhounds in general, please let me know.
Thanks again!

My brother adopted three retired greyhounds, and I was amazed at how affectionate and laid back they are. Also, how beautiful they are. All three got exercised, but most of their time was spent lounging on their beds, looking gorgeous, or being petted. After being treated as simply money makers, those dogs really appreciated being adopted as pets.

Yeah, they’re really great pets. One of the big misconceptions people seem to have is that they need to run a lot. Really, a couple of walks a day is all they really want. Other than that, and maybe a little play time… it’s SLEEP. They really take lazy to a whole other level.

I’m on the other side of the country, so I can’t come to the event, but I hope it is a huge success for you (we’ve had hounds and been involved in greyhound adoption and welfare since 1993. We will be getting another hound soon, to join our almost 12-year-old ex-brood mama)!

I’d love to adopt a greyhound, but I live in the country. Although my five dogs are indoor pets, I let them out in th emorning and when I’m home they’re either in or out, depending on where I am. Most adoption places won’t place dogs in that situation, because of the risk that they’ll run. Although I had an afghan hound, and he always knew to stay around home.

Yeah… that’s probably the (in my mind) biggest downside with this breed. My opinion is that some of them could probably be trusted, but when we adopt them out, it’s part of the contract they sign that the dog will always be on leash when not in a fenced area.

I’m always just a little tempted when we go to the beach… I feel 99% sure my dog would come back… but that 1% and the sad stories of people who have had a dog off leash (or escape) make me keep her leashed.
