Portuguese bookseller in the US?

I am looking for a bookseller in the US that sells books in Portuguese (and will ship them). I would imagine that there is such an animal in the North East (Boston?).
I have found several on-line in Brasil, but have not found one that will ship internationally.

Any help greatly appreciated.

I haven’t been to their website in quite a while, but Schoenhof’s Books in Boston might be what you’re looking for. I remember them being quite pricey, however.

I checked and it doesn’t look like they have anything beyond language learning in Portuguese. Thanks, though.

www.livrariacultura.com.br ships internationally, but charges heftily for 4 day delivery, as in, $40 for one book. It’s half as much to ship slower.

It is kinda fun to shop online in a language one doesn’t understand!

www.grantandcutler.com is in the UK, but has a Portuguese section.

Since you were aware of the Portuguese population in the Boston area, I’m assuming you also know there’s a fair size Portuguese/Brazilian community in Toronto? Not the right country, I know, but maybe less expensive postage than getting books sent from Brasil or the U.K. (Not much of an answer, I know, but maybe it will give you another option to explore.)

Hello. American Bostonian here, but over the last three years I’ve picked up the Portuguese language and now have more Brazilian friends than American!

I don’t live too far from Schoenhof’s, and I plan to pay them a visit sometime soon. I will post back with results.

Not sure if you’re a native Brazilian or not, but:

Saraiva, as far as I can tell, seems to be Brazil’s version of a Barnes and Noble or Borders.

I went to their site (www.saraiva.com.br), randomly selected a book, put it in my online shopping cart, and it does list “Exterior: America do Norte” as a shipping option.

But if all you want is a single book, it’s not cheap!

Book: 32 Reais or 17 dollars (source for currency conversion: www.xe.com)
Shipping: 84 Reais or 46 dollars
Total: 116 Reais or 63 dollars

So, $63 is quite a bit for a $17 book, but:

If I raise the quantity of the identical book to two, the shipping only goes up by 24 reais, or 13 dollars.

So, your second $17 book would only cost you $30, much more affordable.

From my quick test, it seems like Saraiva might be a good site to use to buy multiple books at once. Maybe get together with a friend and make a group order.

They take MasterCard, Visa, American Express, and many others.

I was at one of their stores in Goiania (In the state of Goias) in the large mall there, and it was just like a Borders/Barnes and Noble from here, right down to the chairs, coffee shop, soft music, and cleanliness. Seems like a well run organization.

Obrigado!

Adler’s is Chicago’s answer to Schoenhof’s and they’ll ship to any US address and do special orders. Unfortunately, their online search function is exceedingly primitive.

xiao,

Suggest searching book aggregator sites such as:
www.bookfinder.com

xiao_wenti, I’ve had some luck finding things on Amazon.com. For example, a search on author, Jo Soares, lists a few Portuguese editions. Another search for Rubem Fonseca (Portuguese Edition) lists quite a few titles.

Alternatively, just searching on Portguese edition gives quite a few hits.

Addict. THANK YOU FOR THE SEARCH KEY!
