Rather amusing was the date of the downfall of the thread – September 11.
There’s lots of room on these boads. The following categories are welcome (and this list is not to be thought of as exclusive); halfwits, dimwits, ignoramuses, idiots, reactionaries (both plain and knee-jerk), braggarts, self-promoters, the unwary,the immature, the barely literate, etc. Of course, that’s in addition to all the rest of us “normal” people.
The one caetgory that is NOT welcome, IMHO, are those who are habitual liars, meaning they make assertions they themselves know to be untrue. Typically they defend challenges to those assertions by personal attacks, or sneering contemptuous statements, about their challengers.
How does one tell the difference between a lie and a joke, you ask? In my mind, when it becomes clear that other posters are NOT taking it as a joke, it is incumbent upon the joker to make it clear after they’ve had their fun. How 'bout a smiley and a GOTTCHA!, rather than a singleminded insistance that they are dead serious and being truthful. Phaedrus CLEARLY fits this standard, as does Screwtape.
And Starbury, Gaspode doesn’t fit into this category, again IMHO. Gaspode fits into the categories of “inflexible and unyielding in the face of all evidence to the contrary”, a category that MANY of us fit into, including myself in some instances.
If I could, I would amend the title of my thread, because “we” do not “hoot people off the boards”. We show them up, we do not let their lies stand unchallenged, and they leave of their own accord (presumably, as I noted in my OP, in shame of being caught in a lie). One thing I’ve noted is that most of the links in this thread do not lead to BANNED Members; lying is not grounds for banning. They self-destruct, or more likely go off to some other boards to do their trolling among a less aware population. Good riddance.

That wasn’t a trainwreck. That was a nuclear meltdown misread as a nuclear attack, follwed by a full-scale nuclear exchange, followed by a nuclear winter, followed rats feasting on the corpses.
That is actually the creepiest thing I have EVER read in my life. An I am a very serious reader. And to tell the truth, FreakFreely in not the only poster in it who creeped me out.
I’m having a little trouble finding it, but there was this one guy who kept on calling Bush an “American’t” because he wasn’t perfect and had choked on a pretzel. I think he left after that display. Still searching for it.
I’ve been trying and failing to sleep since finishing the FreakFreely thread and posting my response to it. To me this thread proves the adage, “Be careful what you ask for, you might get it.”
I’ve had more than enough examples of lies, hate, rage, and pettiness on these boards. I hope no one is offended that I ask the Mods to close this thread. My curiosity has been more than satisfied.
I feel I’ve somehow “polluted the boards”, a phrase used by anothe poster tonight in another thread, by starting this one. I disagreed with that poster, his thread did not do so, but somehow I feel this one has.
