When using Agent every time I try to open any file this same file opens. The file is an ad for Quicktime. The only way to close the file is by ctrl/alt/delete. Norton antivirus didn’t find anything but it hasn’t been updated since they started charging to update.
What’s going on? How can I fix this? All help will be greatly appreciated…
Sounds like your default file extensions are all pointing to QuickTime. Most likely you have the free plug in of QuickTime and when it attempts to open a picture (.jpg or .gif) file it is advising you it is not supported and you must upgrade QuickTime.
Of course, I am taking a wild guess as you fail to provide:
a.) What version of Free Agent you are using.
b.) What exactly are you doing to open the file from within Free Agent. (There are a couple ways to open an attachment)
c.) The exact text of the ‘ad’ you keep getting from QuickTime.
Pesky details, I know. I would first check those file extensions.
Just out of curiousity though, why in the world would you assume a virus? This doesn’t seem to even remotely present any characteristics of a virus.
I’d be more inclined to think that .jpg had been re-assigned to quicktime for some reason. Quicktime likes to show an ad as it starts up, and if you fed it an image file instead of something quicktimey, it might choke on it in the way you describe.
Go to your Agent directory and double click on one of the suspect files, see if it doesn’t still happen.
Ah, more help while I was posting. MeanJoe I’ll be happy to give you any details I can.
“a.) What version of Free Agent you are using.”
Version 1.93/32.576
“b.) What exactly are you doing to open the file from within Free Agent. (There are a couple ways to open an attachment)”
I just started using Free Agent today so i’m very clumsy with it. I’ve used three methods of opening the attachment that I can remember. 1) hit the launch icon on the toolbar 2) using the right button on the mouse I select launch 3)save attachment (use antivirus on), open attachment by double clicking or right button
All result in
"c.) The exact text of the ‘ad’ you keep getting from QuickTime.
Well, one of the pictures just opened on its own. ( think I attemted to open earlier) I tried other attachments and they worked. No idea what happened but no problems now. I’ll run adware but all seems well.
Thanks for the help!
