The original 1976 release of “3:47 EST” by Klaatu. Later releases would include the band’s name, in an arc above the sun, but the early pressings did not:

That album was so cryptically anonymous, several of my friends thought it was a secret Beatles reunion album.

This is a real album (and I can prove it, I have one). It’s the soundtrack from the movie.

A lot of people did. The band wasn’t the Beatles, of course, but once the rumour started and the albums started selling based on that rumour, they weren’t about to squelch it. (Source: a friend who knows one of the band members, and has related the story to me.)

Interestingly, their second album (“Hope”) did mention the band name on the front, but did not list the names of the band members anywhere. Their third album (“Sir Army Suit”) did likewise, but the band members were pictured among the people in the lineup, but without identification. It wasn’t until their fourth album (“Endangered Species”) that the band members’ names were put on the album cover.

Note that Wish You Were Here originally came out in blue shrink wrap, so you couldn’t see the cover (there was a sticker, though).
