Correct. But:
Did the “Systematically Arranged” piece click right in as the double definition, or did you start to anagram?
As in the command related to covering your head, not the one to dance funky. Correct? I knew that the clue was getting at “down” being feathers, but that is as far as I really got. I was anagraming duck. :smack:
Ok I had to look in on this one.
An answer given was:
Punch
Assuming the answer given is the answer, What is the second half here?
I mean, I understand the answer and how it relates, but I don’t see how the rest of the clue confirms that answer.
Yep.
Incidentally, one of my favorite cryptic crossword clues I came across once was:
Below, below, below. (10)
It’s just so elegant, simple, and straightforward. The “how” of it is pretty easy to parse, but the “what” doesn’t immediately spring to mind (at least, it didn’t to me, but I did figure it out with no helper letters after thinking about it for a bit).
I’ve actually tried to think of another word that a similar clue would apply to, but haven’t come up with anything.
“Punch and Judy” is a puppet show. To sock somone is to punch them.
Underneath? I just read it as “under”, “neath”, and “underneath” all meaning “below”.
If it’s what I think it is, that’s a bit like clueing SILVER DOLLAR as
Money, money, money (6, 6)
To me that somehow doesn’t feel very satisfactory, because the subsidiary parts are etymologically the same as in the overall answer.
Family doctor in important part (7)
Flower rejected by leaders of Western Europe- it’s a dangerous hybrid (8)
Yep. That was the answer.
werewolfwe + (backwards) flower
Ah. I’m 26. I’m guessing this is a Howdy Doody era type thing ?
I got the second half.
Nope. They’ve been around for practically 300 years, and grew out of Rennaissance puppet shows originally.
So it’s more of an archetype than an actual character like Howdy Doody.
