Post-Colonoscopy Question

Can the colon heal itself if it’s incurred some damage during a colonoscopy but not enough damage to warrant an ER visit? I had a colonoscopy which took only 20-25 minutes under sedation, and they had another patient waiting for mine to get done as they were behind schedule after the patient before me took an extra hour or so. I suspect they about yanked the apparatus out because I’m feeling discomfort particularly on my lower side. It’s been a month since the procedure.

Did you call the Doctor who did the colonoscopy. That would be my first step.

Are you bleeding from the rectum? That’s probably worth a trip back to the doctor.

Bright red in stool - bleeding in or near rectum

Dark red in stool - bleeding ulcer.

Call the doc.
Once this episode is over: find new doc.

There’s no bleeding. The doctor is highly credentialed from a prestigious university, but maybe the doctor doesn’t pay much attention to the nurse while she’s removing the apparatus? Does anyone know if the doctor oversees the removal?

Does anyone know if internal organs such as the colon have the capacity to heal from minor damage?

I had polyps snipped out for biopsy during my colonoscopy a few months back.

The first night after the procedure I got up in the middle of the night to poop, or maybe it was the second night after the procedure. Anyway, I was horrified to see a completely dark red toiled bowl after I was done.

That was the only bloody stool I experienced though, so presumably I healed up just fine after that.

My stool is horrifically red after I eat beets.

Sure, and my pee smells like asparagus after I eat asparagus, but this was blood. It scared the … shit out of me, but everything was fine afterwards. (And still is.)

Did the Doctor remove anything? If yes some healing may be required. If no, then something is not right and call the doctor ASAP.

I’d heard it this way (but I’m not saying yours is wrong):

Bright red in stool - bleeding in or near rectum

Dark red in stool - trouble in large intestine

Totally black stool - trouble in small intestine/stomach (bleeding ulcer; pancreas, liver, gall bladder problems)

But I wouldn’t defend this in open court.

I haven’t had one yet, but will be scheduling my first one soon. I’m not nervous about the procedure itself. Not looking forward to drinking the *stuff the day before.

The “stuff” isn’t so bad-tasting nowadays. And it’s kinda fun in a giggly 5yo’s way to see just how much stuff you can flush outta there and how clear it is towards the last of it. Wow Mommy I’m really pooping lots!!!

Folks with deep hangups about pooping may have trouble, but if that’s you look at the bright side. Maybe you can flush the hangups along with all the excess water.

What to you mean by your ‘lower side’?

Do you mean by your abdomen or anus? Please describe better where the problem area is located.

You shouldn’t be having discomfort so long after such a relatively minor procedure.

Were any polyps removed? Have you ever had problems with hemorrhoids? Did they show you your pics? Did they show you any varicose veins or hemorrhoids just inside the anus that could have been irritated with the bowel prep or procedure?

I think the brand I used was “Moviprep.” It was not like prepping for a movie.

But it wasn’t really all that bad- kinda like a generic sports/electrolyte drink, or maybe a somewhat salty lemonade.

There were two liters all together. I chilled the first one and the instructions saidto drink the first liter down to the marked levels at 15 minute intervals. I used a straw and it takes about 17 swallows to get to the next level.

The second liter is drunk a couple of hours after the first, so there is time to chill that liter too.

I think it took about 2-4 hours to start working and I pooped about 20 times, but there was no cramping or bloating or discomfort other than just pooping a lot. After the first couple of episodes, it was really just liquid.

Overall, I think my anxiety about the whole thing was worse that the prep or the procedure, and I can say I am very relieved to have the whole thing behind me, uh, done with. My doc said I had ‘beautiful intestines’. I don’t think I would agree, but, hey, she’s the expert!

For what it’s worth, I’ve had half a dozen colonoscopies over the years (I’m high risk for colon cancer) and have always felt fine afterwards. No after effects whatever.

No hangups. And good to hear that it doesn’t taste as bad as I thought.
