When they don’t mean the same thing in all cases, and indeed, often mean drastically different things, they can’t be said to mean anything worthwhile anymore.
I don’t know about a high post count signifying that you know how things are run and are not likely to get banned. I don’t really have an example Handy, but I bet there is one.
Okay. Meaningful then. And you’re still wrong. A high count is indicative of nothing other than a considerable amount time spent here, either posting at a leisurely pace over the years or racking them up in some shorter period of time. If you think it shows a familiarity with the rules, then you’re forgetting your own ignorance of the No Post Count Parties rule and the bannings of various long standing or highly visible posters, such as handy.
And if you want to drag my own mentions of my count into this, then go for it. I don’t care. I’ll even post the convenient link for anyone curious.
Post count by itself doesn’t show much of anything. Handy is a good example of that. He mostly posted one or two liners that had little factual content and was oftentimes completely wrong.
However, it does count for something if the poster has a history of making meaningful posts (not just game threads and the like) and has been registered here for a long time.
Is that some kind of Zenster Buddhist sentiment?
Post counts do not count much other than the number of posts, when I first arrived I got a lot of posts in pointless game threads, I don’t deserve about 800 of these posts. They didn’t make me any better a poster and I don’t really think the subsequent 300 odd did either, pointless post padding is too easy to make it any different.
I plan to celebrate my 10,000 post by having a nice 2024 Royal Crown Cola and pissing a perfectly scaled reproduction of the Mona Lisa in the snow.
Your direct reply…
I’m wrong?
“a considerable amount time spent here” (your words)
That sir, is a property of a member.
No. It demonstrates a likely familiarity with the main rules. A one time violation of one of many rules does not disprove the theory that a high post count indicates familiarity with the rules, in general, for the average doper.
Forgot to add to the end of my post…
And that’s another property, both probable, and a plural of ‘property’ so I think I am right.
It might be more like a sentiment of Satan.
Aesiron - I just gotta say WTF? For the record, you’re one of my favorite posters, and 99% I’m in agreement with your posts, but dude, who gives a fuck whether Lobsang or anybody else attaches a little more meaning to their post count that you do to yours?
I respect your right to vent about something that annoys you, but at the same time, if mentioning post counts periodically is something that tickles Lobsang’s fancy, why does it matter in the slightest to you?
Besides, if you’re posting multiple times in a thread about posting too much, doesn’t that seem a little, well, disingenuous?
No offense meant, dude, but you know what they say.
As a member of the SDMB Illuminati*, I phooey on all of this, and am now off to nominate myself for a Nobel Prize.
- I don’t quite qualify for E-Sabbath’s “99’er with < 50 posts” but my posts vs ID number is on the low side.
snort
Now I have to clean seltzer off my monitor.
Was I, um, Whooshed?
But only in the month of december.
Remember when the board crashed and many post counts knocked down a thousand?
good times, good times.
Ah, I love these kind of jokes, in fact I wish we could fill up a whole silo with them. I revel in the whole variety - from the most vanilla to the Wildest. Some people may think the kind of jokes are not _Cool - but I disagree.
OK, OK, I’ll stop before I get thrown in the den with the wolves…
Now I’m confused. I thought urination was up for inclusion in the Olympics.
What’s the greatest nation in the world? Urination!
Ok. I see what you’re saying.
While it’s true that someone with a high post count could be looked upon as having a lot of knowledge, this might not always be the case. Some people might just want to get their two cents in in every single thread, and send off a lot more shit posts than worthwhile ones. As far as going to mean something, I suppose it could mean that they contribute a lot to the board. Outside of that, I really don’t see what importance it holds, though.
It doesn’t hold importance, just value. It means something, not everything not nothing but something. That’s been my argument all along.
None of the accusations thrown at me in this thread have stuck. I stand by my very first post in the thread…
