Post-fire post (but not the Post Fire)

I haven’t been by here the past couple of months (not that gaps are rare for me), but I did notice there were some threads on the California wildfires. Maybe of interest: my family and I remain displaced due to the Eaton Fire, and our house will remain uninhabitable for a long time. We’re one of the random houses you see standing for no clear reason in the middle of the destruction, if you’ve looked at aerial shots. There is a long timeline of area debris cleanup and infrastructure rebuilding ahead. Our property remains without most of its utilities. The interior of the house is, well, quite a mess and is going to take a lot of mitigation work. A good chunk of the contents will be a loss. Still better than losing all of it, like so so many of my close friends and neighbors have.

I wanted to tip my hat to @Stranger_On_A_Train for his on-point posts about the realities of the situation in the prior threads (and others posters as well, but his posts stood out.) Re: things like the realities of water infrastructure in the face of such an extreme event, the fact that residential landscaping was not why this fire spread so violently, etc.

Wider interest has died down on this topic, but I figured I’d make this post anyway, as it remains a (second) full-time occupation here. And maybe there’s interest in on-the-ground thoughts on the event and outlook – who knows.

I am so sorry to hear you are among the affected but pleased that you didn’t lose everything (unlike many) even though there is a lot of mitigation and refurbishment ahead of you. I have a friend who is in the same situation. I know that there are many faculty and staff at Caltech (and even more at JPL) who have lost everything, and the latter now facing uncertainty as to their future employment in addition to this tragedy.
