I’ve been a heavy lurker since AOL days. I mean, heavy — often checking the board several times a day – for *years *-- but rarely posting.
When the board went “paid subscription” I became a Charter member and continued my lurking ways, but then let the subscription lapse when I realized I was paying to post in a place where I hardly ever post. :smack:
A few weeks ago, I decided to subscribe again when I heard that members won’t have to see the ads —but now I find that I rarely sign in. Guess I’m just more of a lurker than a poster. It’s weird, because I sometimes feel like I “know” some of the longtime regulars here, but none of them would have *any *idea who I am.
Anyway, just thought I’d say hello.

Well, my goodness. This is a strange feeling indeed! I’ve been a regular lurker for, um … is it really the better part of a decade now? Yeesh!

I found my way to the SDMB in the early (to me, at least) days of the internet, having come across references to it in the latest Straight Dope book I had read, and lurked extravagently for quite a while before gathering up my courage and posting a bit. I slipped back into lurking once I realized that my familiar feeling of being the smartest one in the room was most definitely not based on being in this room. I’ve been reading and learning and snickering at y’all’s wit and wisdom ever since.
Over the last year or so, I’ve come thisclose to ponying up the $15 when I was particularly deeply touched by what I had read, but I felt a bit awkward about jumping into a conversation when people didn’t realize I had been there. But hey, look, here I am now! So, Sampiro, I’m so sorry about your mother. TokyoPlayer, you and your family have been very much in my thoughts and I’ve been sending sticky thoughts to Beta-chan since I read the fabulous news. norinew, you’re an incredible mother and if I was wearing a hat, I’d be in the process of tipping it to you even as I type.
What an odd difference this makes from just reading – it’s so participaty!

At least it didn’t take me long to get back to my usual state of being on here.
I thought the same thing.
I think I posted once or twice before the board went to paid subscriptions, but under a different username and with an email address that has long since been lost. In the several years that have passed since then, the SDMB played a crucial role in my ambitious efforts to waste nearly 100% of the time I spent in the library while working on my BA.
So… thanks all, glad to finally be able to take an active role.

I’m another that’s been reading since the AOL days, but rarely ever posted. I did pay for a charter membership to support the board, but then let it lapse as I’m more of a lurker by nature. This place has gotten me through many a dull day at work though! I’m probably a much different person than when I started, it’s strange to think how long it’s been.
I don’t know if I’ll post much, but it’s good to know I can if I’d like.
