Post Road

US Route 1 runs all the way from Maine to Florida, almost paralleling Interstate 95 most of the way.

Here in Rhode Island, it’s known as Post Road, as it is through part of Massachusetts and Connecticutt.

I’m wondering how much along Route 1’s length it is know as “Post Road.” And if it is known by that for it’s entire length, would that make it the longest named road in the US?

I think “Post road” is short for Boston Post Road, and that under this name it runs from NYC to Boston. Here’s Wikipedia on the subject.

All about the Boston Post Road.

It runs right through the center of town where I grew up. (And yes, the Post Office is there. )

When I lived in Maryland, Rt. 1 was known as the Baltimore National Pike, or simply the National Pike.

The section that runs through the Bronx is called just Boston Road, it becomes Boston-Post Road at the Westchester line.

Didn’t Benjamin Franklin lay out the original mile markers on it?

That’s not correct. You’re thinking of US Route 40 West…on the west side of Baltimore City only. On the East side, it is known as Pulaski Highway…even into Delaware which surprised me!

Looking at my copy of MS Streets and Trips, I see that from Belair, MD, to Baltimore, Route 1 is known as Belair Rd. From Baltimore to Laurel, MD, it’s known as Washington Blvd. Then it changes to Baltimore Ave. until Bladensburg, where it becomes Rhode Island Ave. It winds its way through the District of Columbia as 6th Street, Constitution Ave., and 14th Street, then crosses over the Potomac as I-395. In Alexandria, VA, it’s Jefferson Davis Highway, N. and S. Patrick Street, and turns into Richmond Highway in Huntington. After that, I lost interest.

But if you really want to know the 6 million names of Route 1, MS S&T or perhaps Mapquest should provide more information than you could possibly need.

You’re absolutely right. Sorry for my mis-information. :smack:
