I thought of another one. Who was the first overall pick in the history of the USFL draft? Hint: it was 1983, and he never played it down for the LA Express, who drafted him.

Dan Marino

I suspect there are quite a few retired Canadian NHL players who are now naturalized US citizens.

Okay?

Joey Jay was the first Little Leaguer to make it to Major League Baseball. While he did play in the MLB World Series, he did not play in the Little League WS.
Boog Powell is the first to have played in both the LLWS and the ML WS when he started in Game 1 of the 1966 World Series for Baltimore. Later in that game, Jim Barbierei pinch hit for the Dodgers to become the second person to play in both the LL WS and MLB WS.

Chapman’s beaning had no bearing on the rule change. The spitball was outlawed prior to the 1920 season (with some pitchers grandfathered.)

Well, my brother only scored 1 goal (4 points), but we’re still immensely proud of him.

In the same vain, I believe

Hank Aaron (755) and his brother Tommie (13) hold the home run record for a set of brothers in MLB.

Here’s a 2-parter - name the sports-based organizations whose oaths/pledges include these phrases:

  1. Strive to win

  2. Let me win

Special Olympics

Little League?

We have winners already.

Little League Pledge:
“I trust in God, I love my country, and will respect its laws.
I will play fair, and strive to win, but win or lose, I will always do my best.”

Special Olympics:
“Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”

Who played on both a World Series championship team and an NBA championship team?

Gene Conley. He played baseball for the 1957 Braves champs, and played basketball for the Boston Celtics in 1958-59, 1959-60, and 1960-61

Who the hell came up with the Little League Pledge? That’s creepy.

Presbyterian Blue Hose

What’s creepy about it?

I first heard it as: name college teams whose name does not contain an animal (humans are not animals for this question), does not involve a color, does not end in “s.” That tends to narrow it down a lot more.
Then we end up with (division I NCAA only):
UMass Minutemen
Illinois Fighting Illini
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Navy Midshipmen

Hofstra used to be the Flying Dutchmen, but changed it to the Pride for some stupid reason. Pride may be for a pride of lions, though.
The jury is still out on Marshall Thundering Herd, as it may be considered an animal group.
Hawaii women’s teams are called the Wahine, but I’m not sure if that is official.
Some teams are known as the Phoenix, but I consider that an animal, though mythical.

There may be a couple of other smaller DI colleges with names that fit. I think if you go to DII and DIII, there are a lot more, but I’m too lazy to look.

The “god” part leaves out a segment of the population that doesn’t believe. The “love my country” is jingoist blather. These are kids playing a game.

It was written in 1954, when the US Pledge of Allegiance was modified to include the phrase “under God”. Not really much controversy at the time. I love my country because it’s the US of A. That pledge may be a little bigoted with the ‘god’ stuff but it’s not creepy, it’s just dated.

They certainly want you to think that.
