Potato juice?

Frank Sinatra’s Coffee Song just popped up on the ol’ iPod.

No tea or tomato juice,
You’ll see no potato juice

I thought he sang ‘potato juice’ because it rhymed with tomato juice.

Turns out it’s a thing. Who knew?

I’d have guessed “potato juice” to mean vodka.

I’m pretty sure he did (pretty clever too). That was before everything could be juiced and sold as the latest miracle cure.

Field fresh potatoes are so juicy that you often don’t need to add water to them to ferment them. So potato juice can at least be a step towards vodka.

That’s what I thought. I googled ‘potato juice’ to see if it was slang for vodka, and saw all of the actual potato juice links. I never did search for ‘potato juice’ AND ‘vodka’.

ETA: When I first heard the song, I thought he used it because it rhymed. It was just today when I started wondering about it that I thought he might mean vodka.
