Supervenusfreak and I have officially ended our pet moratorium (which descended after we acquired the rabbit on top of three cats). We discussed it on Friday, after he was offered a beagle mix puppy by the current aide of his old client, which he turned down at the time because of that moratorium. We decided on Friday to find out if the puppy was still available, but the aide decided she was going to keep the puppy herself, so no go there. We put feelers out with our friends and coworkers over the weekend and on Monday, but no offers were found.
So today, since we’re both on vacation for Veterans’ Day, we went to the Humane League of Lancaster County to look at the dogs they had available. We took a slow walk down their dog hall…there were so many beautiful dogs that needed good homes. From Luna, a completely white huskie, to Amara, an older beagle, to Frank, a younger beagle who had quite a set of lungs on him, to Milo, a lighter-colored version of my mother’s shih-tzu, to Diamond, a lovely little pit bull (who KNEW pit bulls had cocker spaniel eyes?!). But the very first cage held four siblings, border collie mix puppies (they think the other parent was a Jack Russell), two rough and two smooth. The most enthusiastic of them was a little girl named Daisy, one of the rough type. We got to spend about an hour with her in one of the visitation rooms and we fell absolutely in love. This little girl was meant for us!
So we did all the paperwork and paid our reserve fee. They’re keeping her until she’s spayed (her appointment is Thursday) and we’re picking her up on Friday (I’m going to use up my personal hours (can’t keep them after the end of the year anyway)).
Unfortunately, I have to break The Law and not offer photos yet. We forgot to bring the camera when we went (we weren’t expecting to actually adopt so quickly!) and she and her siblings aren’t on the website yet. But I will take pics on Friday and link them into this thread then.
Oh, Wow. Around here, people breed BorderJacks for one thing - Flyball. (Short, fast and obsessive.) Sounds like you might have a handful! Get thee to classes! Oh - and have fun with the little girl, too!
I’ll be here, waiting for pics withe the rest of the puppy-holics around here! Congrats!
Adopting a homeless pet is a good deed indeed! Congrats on your new family member. I second the recommendation to get her into classes – and start learning as much as you can yourselves about dogs in general and about “Border Jacks” mixes and/or the two breeds from which she comes . Online resources are a great way to get started.
Congratulations on your new puppy. That will be one bright puppy who will need to be busy. I still recall someone, might be Stanley Coren, who said that if not kept busy border collies are smart enough to be neurotic, and smart enough to make you neurotic too.
