Power in the Apocalypse (How to build a Wood-Gasifier)

You’ve probably heard of wood gas-fueled vehicles used in WWII. What happens when the Zombie Apocalypse comes? (Or there’s a socio-economics collapse after electing a fascist president? :stuck_out_tongue: ) A 15-year-old kid posted instructions on how to build a gasifier.

Let us know if you build one.

Actually, I’ve never heard of “wood gas”, let alone cars powered by it. Thanks for the neat links.

My neighbor down the road built one with some help from his friends, myself included.
Does that count? I helped gather the materials & I held pieces of steel as he welded them.

He tried it in an old Datsun pickup. It was even more gutless than when the rig was running unleaded fuel. It did the job, but no time records were in any danger of being broken. I lived out of a 1959 VW bus back in the day. This thing had less power than the “modified” 36 HP engine that I had in that old bus. It did run for a long time though. He eventually hooked it up to his household emergency generator. It works well on that application.

I have heard of a fellow up in the hills around here that powers his sawmill with a Buick V-6 That is run with one. I am trying to find out exactly where he is so I can go watch it work. I will pick his brains about its construction & how he feels about its actual usefulness. I make sense to me that it should work well for that application. It makes its own fuel as you us it. How cool is that?

Back in the day, those wood-powered (or coke-powered, they called it ‘producer gas’ here) had such low compression they ran out of pull going up hills.
