I’ve been posting a lot of wireless router questions these days because the one I’m trying to set up is being a mega bitch. With one of the possible fixes by D-Link’s fanTAStic (that’s sarcastic) tech support, they said that the computer that initially connected to the Internet could have some PPPoE software on it and that DSL almost certainly has it on there.
Except, like always, there’s a snag.
You see, before the Three Computers, there was only one. We’ll call it “Koko”. Koko was the first computer used on this particular Internet connection. When I went back to school, Koko became my computer. The parents, then bought “Raoul”. Raoul was then the computer used on that particular Internet connection. It required nothing more special than a cable to connect it to the modem supplied by SBC (dad’s note: sometimes, like, maybe once every three months, it needs reconnection. I have no clue if this is true, or how true it is. I have yet to see it). While I was at school, I got a laptop from work. We’ll call that one “Hector”. So now, I’m home. Chuck and Koko sit on a table, Hector sits on the desk. All three are connected to a switch and, until maybe a couple weeks ago, all three could be used simultaneously on the Internet. That suddenly stopped for no reason, prompting a “Your computer is trying to find an IP address” bubble in the lower right hand corner. Plugging in the Xbox now makes that bubble pop up as well.
I was thinking that if there IS some PPPoE software, it’s on Koko, because it was the original computer used for the connection. If there is that software, how can I find out? When I find it, I just Add/Uninstall it?
grumble stupid computers…
