Praise Ronald Reagan -- F*&@ the Taxpayers!

I work for a NY State Court. The office was all abuzz this afternoon because word came down from Albany that all state offices are going to be closed on Friday in commemoration of Ronald Reagan’s demise. WTF! I am OUTRAGED! I like a day off as much as the next person, but I cannot believe that anyone thinks that the best way to honor an ex-President who died in his bed at age 96 of natural causes is to close down an entire state’s government for a whole day – with pay, naturally – and inconveniencing literally **MILLIONS ** of taxpayers!

Has the world gone completely mad? (Yes, this is a rhetorical question.)

We just got an absolutely lousy contract (which passed by a margin of six or eight votes under very suspicious circumstances) from a state that is supposedly in dire straits financially. No, I don’t doubt that post 911 expenses are high and that the state is carrying an increased burden due to programs which have reduced federal funding and have to be financed by state taxes. I don’t doubt that money is tight. So what could possibly justify wasting millions of dollars by giving the whole state the equivalent of “Senior Cutout Day” with pay? Does anyone really think that my colleagues are going to spend the whole day watching funeral coverage on television and waxing reminiscent about Ronald Reagan? By the way, TV reception is really LOUSY on the beach.

Meanwhile, bright and early on Friday morning, many thousands of taxpayers who haven’t heard about the shutdown are going to take off work and show up at motor vehicle offices, courts and other state facilities looking for services which they will not receive. Can you imagine travelling to NY from another state for a court appearance and finding out that it was cancelled for this? What if you were scheduled to be in court on Friday for a hotly contested custody hearing that you had been waiting for for months? Sorry. Apparently, the welfare of your child is not as important as paying homage to a dead man.

Unexpected shutdowns like this wreak total havoc on court calendars, and getting a trial date is hard enough as it is. In fact, this is one of the worst times of year for trials, since judges, like everyone else, take summer vacations, so a trial which gets bumped on Friday might have to wait for quite some time to get back on. With the harsh winter (which caused several shutdowns) factored in, this may just be the worst year EVER to try to get your petition addressed.

The frustration and confusion that litigants have to contend with in court is more than enough as it is without being hit with something like this. It will fuel the litigants’ anger and make them feel even more justified in their almost universal belief that the courts are just here to screw them over and that we don’t care about them. Harsh consequences follow when litigants fail to show up for court – warrants of arrest, inquested orders of support, loss of custody. I don’t think they are asking too much by expecting the Court to be there for them on the dates that they are supposed to appear.

On top of everything else, the taxpayers will again be left with a bad taste in their mouths about us “lazy” state employees who “do nothing but feed off the public teat.” Well, guess what, folks. Better than 95% of the state – and county – employees that I have encountered over the years have been hardworking, caring people who want to get the job done quickly and well.

I am appalled. Thanks, Governor Pataki. Thanks a load.

I was wondering when someone started a pit thread on the National Day of Mourning but I was expecting it to be about Dubya. This was his idea, Pataki is just following suit.

If Dubya decides to jump off a cliff, does that mean that Pataki has to, too? It’s still too much money to waste commemorating a man who supposedly was dedicated to cutting government spending. :frowning:

In this case, yeah. State and local governments (and even some parts of the private sector) are known for following federal when it comes to having impromptu time off.

Since a President doesn’t die every day, I was wondering if this was SOP. I’d also heard that the Feds (house I believe?) were taking the week off from legislation. Is this what typically happens?

Despite what I may think of Reagan (and I’ve been mum on it because I generally don’t get in to politics at all) my cynical side muttered quietly “don’t they have work to do?”

Anyone know the precedent?

Gov. Owens announced today that Colorado offices will remain open: “The practice in Colorado has been to maintain services for our citizens.”

What sucks even more is that the State of Ohio has refused to honor the presidents request for a National Holiday because it would require giving state employees the day off. Unless Governor Taft officially acknowledges it, it will not happen. The funny thing is, he will still treat it as a national day of mourning (holiday) without giving the people the benefit. I guess I see it as the opposite of the OP. Any day that labor gets off is a good day and the politicians are now lining up to save money but still get the press for recognizing a National Day of Mourning.

In light of the recent posts, I retract my statement that Pataki has to follow suit. Like Lissa, I do find it odd that some governemnts will remain open.

Good for him! I wouldn’t be in favor of doing the taxpayers out of their services even if a SITTING president died.

I appreciate your point of view. I just feel that taxpayers count as “labor,” too.

Just a bit of a nitpick and to enlighten some ignorance…

He was 93.

Please don’t tease us with unlikely scenarios.

Whoops! Partly ignorance, mostly laziness. (It’s that damned civil service attitude of mine kicking in!) I was reluctant to start surfing in the middle of a post, so I took my best shot. Sorry.

I think having a National Day of Remembrance as SOP for all Presidential deaths is a nice idea, myself.

What should be pitted, however, are the continuing “Death of Reagan” news reports. Unless the guy’s rising from the grave in three days, there’s no point to any of them…

Now I have a terrifying vision of Zombie Reagan…

Oh wait, that was the 80s.

When I saw “Fuck the taxpayers” I immediately thought of Clinton

FWIW, I know that at least in Illinois (and possibly nationally), most or all postal workers were given the day off on the national day of mourning for Nixon. I don’t know about other government workers on that day, or for previous presidential deaths.

Then donate your pay for that day to a charity. What the fuck are you in an uproar about over receiving money from taxpayers for a day off?!? :wally

Well, it’s a good day for those individuals, it’s a bad day for everyone else who is paying them and not getting a lick of work done for their money.

Is there anything particularly wrong with having a “Day of Rememberance” on a Saturday?

But he wasn’t the president. He used to be the president. Quite a while ago.

Why are ex-presidents still called “Mr President”?

If he was so popular, and it seems he was, why was he limited to two terms? What does America gain by limiting presidents to two terms? Many other democratic countries have leaders democraticaly voted that go on to serve more then two terms (anyone remember Maggie Thatcher?)

My country has had more then one PM serve more then 2 terms. If that is what the people want why is it bad?

I only ask because it seems many Americans would have loved to have Ronnie back for a third term. I didn’t like him at all so it wouldn’t have affected me. I reaaaaaaaaaaally don’t like Dubya so I don’t want him to have a second term let alone a third!

Why can’t US presidents do more then two terms? Why are they still “Mr President” years after they finished being president?
