Pre Poll Prep - What are your biggest specific SDMB annoyances?

The stick and slipper jokes. They show up in every single joke thread. yeah, they are clever - but by now everyone has heard them.

I was going to say Hal Briston Jokes, but they seem to have finally dried up.

Hi Opal needs to go away forever.

I’ve noticed several threads lately where the answer to the OP is easily googled. What are parking lights for? What’s pwnd? Did England have 3 wheeled cars?
OK, that bugs me, but what happened to the integrity of this place? All of those threads had helpful answers and no snarky “lemme google that for ya”. What’s with this kinder gentler dope of late?

Also - has the number of posters who refuse to use their shift key increased lately? The Harry Potter movie thread seems to have about 5 of them.

The squid/Goat/Pie stuff for new member threads. I can’t even begin to talk about how played it is.

Hi, Opal doesn’t bother me.

I hate when a thread gets… well, not hijacked or derailed, but a Cafe Society thread about movie mistakes will go on for a page and a half with three posters rehashing discrepancies in a movie I’ve never seen instead of posting new and/or different examples. Technically, they’re still on topic, but I don’t want to see 2 pages worth of Firefly chatter on a topic about cancelled series in general.

Cliquishness and I-have-been-here-longer-then-you-itis.

“Oops, I didn’t read the whole thread.” Whether it results in zombification, repeating points that were discussed at length on the previous page, or reviving a derail after a mod said to knock it off. It tends to happen in threads that aren’t even that long.

Long, point-by-point rebuttals formatted as an interlinear dissection of a long post, where most of the replying poster’s comments consist of single words (“Yes.” “No.” “Cite?”) and the argument has nothing to do with the rest of the thread.

Their fingers won’t spread widely enough.

Threads that start with something like:

Tell me what to think about <insert link here>.

If it is worth starting a thread about, then it is worth summarizing the link, and offering some comment.

And then, the single issue Dopers seem to think you should listen to them! Like my mind doesn’t immediately shut down when the Usual Suspects show up. I don’t trust them as much as a stopped clock.

I’m pretty easy-going on most memes, but:

I hate Hi Opal too and am sick unto death of it.
I also hate when people let one of those single issue posters hijack a thread to hell and gone because they HAVE to respond…oh noes, someone is wrong on the internet.
Along the lines of “I didn’t read the whole thread” is when people read up to, say, your Post at number 75, wherein you made a wrong statement, and then immediately rush to post to correct you. Not noticing post 77 and 78, where someone already corrected you, and even better, post 80, wherein you saw it and corrected yourself! Read the damn thread through!

I haven’t. Can you elaborate? (Do you mean the one that goes “what’s brown and sticky”? If so, what’s the slipper one?)

More annoyances: unnecessary restrictions on profanity in the Pit.

Dopers from country A denying the validity of some fact about society in country B, even when confirmed by everyone posting from country B.

I hate when I post something and three or four posts later, someone says the same thing as me and everyone agrees with them.

I make it a point to read all the posts before I post and acknowledge any previous poster who said the same thing I’m about to say. Some days I feel like everyone on the board has me on ignore (and really, there is NO reason to have me on ignore…)

I also hate when people link to IMDB or YouTube pages without reference, like this. IMDB and YouTube links have nothing in them that references the contents of the page you’re linking to. I really hate having to click to see what you are talking about.

Well, ZipperJJ let me acknowledge this too. I’m not usually the first one to come up with the right answer, but when I do it bugs me when someone else takes the credit.

As for linking, I also agree. It bugs me even more because I can’t get to Youtube or just about any picture-sharing website while at work. So, without a description I’m euchred.

-mmm

I agree on everything you say but especially the youtube links. I hate clicking on youtube links and most of the time I am careful but sometimes I slip up. Just tell me!

The inability to say “I don’t believe you” in Great Debates. We can’t even imply we think people are lying, so we have to either dance around obvious liars, or end up implying we think that they are crazy or stupid rather than dishonest.

By far my greatest annoyance.

I’ll take a million zombie jokes anyday over that pedantic, useless bullshit.

Cliques.

And ZipperJJ you are not alone. If I participate in anything other than a technical question type of thread I usually end up wondering if I am typing in invisible ink.

Also, grammar Nazis.

"Um…" So self-impressed that you don’t suffer fools lightly.

"The Usual Suspects". A cheap-shot term, it’s true. But scrolling down and seeing an interesting thread title is similar to seeing a new ice cream flavor at the store. Opening the thread and finding that the same old boors have induced rigor mortis upon it is similar to bringing home the ice cream and discovering it’s just a freezer-burnt lump.

Wow, lots of responses. I’ve tried condensing/listing them, but some of the longer ones defy, um, condensation.

I’ll wait a bit before putting up the poll; please review the following and suggest any changes needed.

**Markdash **- I believe ‘mmm’ fits nicely into my ‘unnecessary sign-offs’ category.

And finally, could someone please explain ‘Hi, Opal’ to me?

And the slipper joke as well.

The inability to believe that someone could possibly disagree with you without having nefarious motives.

Not sure how to fit that into a poll option.
