Season 1 of Preacher just popped up on Hulu - is it worth watching? I saw a fairly long thread (which is a good sign) but didn’t want to spoil myself in case it’s compelling TV.
Speaking of AMC stuff, should I stick with Into the Badlands? I didn’t even make it through the first episode because my cliché buffer shorted out about halfway through- had to send the damned thing in for repairs.
I like Badlands - most of the fighting is pretty well done from a ‘kung fu film’ category - the story is actually reasonably interesting - but is mostly a way to set up more fighting. it gets much better as the season progresses with the chars.
Preacher is definitely worth watching, I even plan to rewatch it before season 2 kicks off. Badlands has good fight scenes and other stuff around it that is mostly excuse for good fight scenes.
Maybe I just need to stick with Badlands, because the first episode starts with a great fight scene and then there’s just a bunch of moping and other non-fighting things that bored the hell out of me.
I watched three or four episodes and gave up.
I really wanted to like this show, but it seemed to be nothing but stupid people doing stupid things for stupid reasons.
Yeah. I loved the comic “Preacher” is based on, so the contrast made me think of the TV show as flawed.
It has a lot of the superficial elements I loved from the comic, the weirdness, the surreal humor, the oddball characters… but while Garth Ennis mixed those elements into something you couldn’t get enough of and couldn’t wait for the next installment, the show just blandly drags on, with fairly sparse action, less amusing dialogue and way worse written characters.
There’s still plenty to enjoy. Some individual scenes are impressive. I will watch S2. It was just a bit of a chore at times.
I thought Preacher was good but not great. (I haven’t read the comics.)
On the down side, I thought the main character/actor was the least interesting person in the show. And some of the “quirky” aspects seemed a little twee to me.
On the plus side, I thought it was different from most of the stuff that’s seen on TV so it had a certain freshness or uniqueness to it. And I thought Jackie Earle Haley was awesome!
It reminds me of Tarantino movies and South Park in some ways. Mixing serious and unserious approaches to its subject matter. Innovative in technical terms - even avant-garde at times.
I really liked it. My girlfriend hated it - because the storyline is pretty thin.
I like Preacher a lot. But it makes me a little tense to watch it, because Mrs. L.A. is a Christian. I’m always waiting for her to become offended. But she says she likes it too. She says it’s funny. (I do like the two angel characters.)
I’ve heard the comics start after the first season, and that the first season was a set-up.
I watched the first four or five episodes. I like it, but the editing and cuts make things pretty damned confusing. Everything is too disjointed. It feels like they’re trying to do the Guy Ritchie Snatch/Lock Stock thing where all the convergent plotlines come together for a huge “ah ha!” moment, but they’re not quite getting it right.
