My hope is Starfield is as good, or better, than Skyrim. That would certainly justify the years of development and delaying any Fallout 5 or new Elder Scrolls game.
The below article is not really on-topic for this thread as it is simply stating that papers have revealed the are NOT going to release Elder Scrolls VI on a Sony Playstation system, no matter if it is PS5 or PS6.
However, a brief mention I read online is that Xbox is releasing a new system in 2028(that is their target, anyway) and it is definitely possible that the main focus would be getting Elder Scrolls VI out for that system when it launches.
Which would mean that it will skip this generation…or come out on both this generation and nextgen.
It might be time for another Skyrim run.
Still less than halfway to besting Duke Nukem Forever’s dev cycle.
Metroid Dread took 16 years, which was one more year than Duke.
An issue (nearly typed the issue) with making huge AAA games is that if you release a stinker (and Starfield is near universally declared one, or mixed at best) you’re out major $$$. A big failure, or something you throw together to get anything out the door to start recouping your losses has killed many a substantial developer, and few (exceptions like Cyberpunk 2077) have the skills, the money, or the credibility to fix said issues.
Bethesda could be one of them, especially now with Big Daddy Microsoft backing… but what’s worrying me these days about a future ES6 (and more importantly to me Fallout 5) is the delay and replanning involved if Bethesda finally dumps Creation Engine. It was … okay in Skyrim, it is damn creaky and failing in Starfield (thus all the “hidden” loading screens) and trying to run ES6 on it will probably be a deadly mess IMHO. Of course, as of the last article I found they’re STILL planning on using it for ES6 as of December of 2024 (less than a month ago).
If they do, I expect it’ll be a bug ridden mess and may doom Bethesda. If they do bite the bullet and jump to another system (Unreal 5 or some other) then that’ll probably tack on several more years to the already extended development cycle.
I don’t expect to see it before mid-to-late 2027 at the most optimistic, and again, don’t expect it to be fun to play for at least 6 months past that based on prior Bethesda games. And Odin only knows when I’ll get to see a single player Fallout game again. ![]()
Did that last year. With the right mods, it’s enjoyable, although I’ve lost track of which semi-special edition I’m currently running.
I’m in the midst of a run right now. Might actually finish the main quest this time.
At least there’s so much stuff in that game that no two playthroughs are alike. I never even found the necrophiliac wizard and his draugr harem prior to the run I’m on right now.
