In the days of relatively few studios and public perceptions that compelled stars (at least on the surface) to behave like relative human beings (sorry, Fatty Arbuckle), Mel would have been toast as an actor, director, stunt man, whatever.
in 2010 and beyond his options will be somewhat limited but after this dies down a bit he’ll probably still be able to raise dough for an “independent” film (“Jesus II - The Scourge” or “Revenge of the Pack of Niggers”) and enough people will go to them if there are good ratings, to keep him employed.
I can’t envision entertainment by Mel fabulous enough to make me want to fork over money to such a shithead, but others will feel differently.
I’ve been wondering how well his new movie might do if the studio just bit the bullet and marketed the freak show directly. Intercut shots of the movie with snippets of his rant, and end with, “come see it; you know you’re curious.”
Hollywood is not the town to be openly misogynist, anti gay, anti black, anti jew, divorced Catholic who hates cops. Alcoholic is one thing, but the rest of these, well, he’s spread his stupid/crazy shit too thin, covered too many bases to see opportunity come his way again, in my opinion.
I’m going with DMark on this one. The fact the William Morris Agency has now dropped him will be the biggest hurdle for him to overcome. The masses will forgive stupid behavior if you put out an entertaining product but if you can’t get representation in Hollywod you are screwed.
Acting is a weird profession. I probably do business with and give money directly or indirectly to hundreds or thousands of people every day. I’m sure that group is going to include at least a couple racists, wife-beaters, alcoholics, child-abusers, cultists, stalkers and anti-semites. But I don’t really spend a lot of time worrying if the guy I’m buying a sandwich from or the person that drove the truck that delivered my donuts from the central distribution hub to the 7-11 are dead-beat dads or have unpleasant views regarding Mexicans.
But lots of people hold the guy that prances around in a kilt pretending to be a Scottish freedom fighter to a higher standard.
Not really ranting against the phenomenon, and I’d say acting celebrities probably profit much more from the publics investment in their personal lives then they’re harmed by it, it just strikes me as bizarre sometimes.
Well, ya gotta give the guy credit for being an equal-opportunity shithead. Jews, gays, women, blacks, law enforcement officers, holocaust victims…Plus he’s an abusive violent alcoholic. Charming.
What I’d like to know is how many of us AREN’T in a group that Mel Gibson hates?
Maybe I should start a poll–what groups am I forgetting?
Unlikely. You think woman will feel all la-de-dah about a guy who wishes gang rape on the mother of his child? That’s just too much to ignore.
Am I forgetting something about John Travolta? What seriously offensive things has he done?
I vote that he’s toast, except for a chance of success behind the camera–but only in stuff that he produces himself.
I dunno. The most recent reports, in which he supposedly, on tape, stated that he would “bury you in the rose garden” are a bit fucking much, even beyond the pack of niggers comment.
well, Mel hasn’t really done much acting lately, according to Box Office Mojo (Edge of Darkenss was his first movie since 2004). He has directed of course, but it seems his acting career is basically over, whether it is his own idea or the market, I cannot say. But I don’t really see him coming back as a superstar. He has been eclipsed by the likes of Geroge Clooney and Brad Pitt.
But I could see him directing and making some critical hits. But I do not see a studio rsiking a big budget movie with him.
So my answer is he is probabaly in the same place he has been the past few years, non-entity as an actor, reasonably sucessful director.
Travolta and his wife are Scientologists. That alone is enough for some people to put him in the nut-case category, although I’ve never gotten the impression that Travolta is even remotely a whack-job.
Like some sort of Sandwich Nazi? Guess it depends on how good the sandwich is.
But honestly, I occasionally hear crazy rants from various people (for some reason I have a face that tells every nutbag that sees me that I’m going to be interesterd in their crazy conspiracy theory, a few weeks ago a cabbie talked my ear off about how woman shouldn’t be trusted in positions of authority because they’re more susceptible to demonic temptation ::eyeroll:: ) . I sometimes argue with them or tell them they’re idiots, but I don’t really go out of my way to avoid them in the future, if they were in charge of something important I might do so, but misogynists seem as capable of driving a cab as anyone else.
And I don’t have to hear Mel Gibson’s ravings to purchase his product, they seem pretty confined to his personal life, its not like he sits next to me while I’m watching Braveheart and tells me about how he hits his girlfriend because she deserves it.
I think he’ll keep working. But he’ll never be back where he was. He’d already fallen out of that level.
Gibson was an action thriller star. Those kinds of movies take a hundred million or more to film. Studios aren’t going to commit that kind of money on a lead whose public image they’re unsure of. They’ll think “We can get Jackman or Neeson instead.”
Well, there’s Michael Richards. Granted he was never as a big a star as Mel and he was keeping kind of a low profile anyway in the years before the infamous n-word incident. But other than the “Curb Your Enthusiasm” Seinfeld reunion he really hasn’t done anything since then.
Gibson was able to somewhat redeem himself after the anti-Semitic rant a few years back because it was (or at least appeared to be) a one-off thing, he apologized to the right folks and, let’s face it, people say stupid shit when their drunk.
But racism and domestic abuse? That’s a pretty potent combination, and I doubt a million prostrations before Jesse Jackson or NOW will save him this time. And the fact that this is the second time he’s been caught making bigoted comments will make people question the sincerity of any apology he makes.
And it may be un-PC to say so, but being an anti-Semite in Hollywood isn’t going to make you many friends. Sure, if he manages to pull off a blockbuster, all will probably be forgiven, but even with his own production company he’ll be at a handicap in trying to work the proper connections and channels to make said blockbuster.
