Can he be redeemed professionally, in public opinion, in his personal life, & for those of you who once had some regard for him, in your esteem?
I think he can. Right now, he is rightly vilified & I hope Oksana soaks him after Robyn does. But I think he can be restored to some degree of respectability- with a WHOLE lot of effort & the willingness to consistently & persistently work on his demons.
Humility, sobriety and the remainder of his life quietly devoted to public service and his children.
Real public service; working long hours unrequited and unheralded in the shadows, personally building homes for the destitute of all colors, for instance.
Then, and only then, after he’s dead, perhaps there will be a general acceptance that he genuinely changed and was genuinely transformed into a decent human being.
It appears alcohol use correlates with many of his contretemps. A demonstration of abstinence would seem to be in order. And long-term - I am not talking about thirty days of detox and all is forgiven.
God forgives, as you well know, but the movie-going public is more fickle. This is both a good and a bad thing for public figures such as Mel who want to rebuild their lives.
Taking care of his alcoholisms & womanizing is essential. It would probably help if Mel became active in a real church that he doesn’t own & has a history older than 50 years.
It WOULD NOT be showing up on Larry King, or a Barbara Walters special, where they stroll down a country lane, with Mel giving all kinds of excuses and justifications. I could just barf when I see that. They apparently think the public is sentimental and easily swayed, “oh, he/she’s not so bad after all, he/she sounds really really sorry.” Not me! I’m cynical. I hope he lays low, really low, for many years and stays that way. Do not want to see him on the cover of People magazine with a butt-licking article inside telling how he’s seen the light, etc.
I said this in another thread, but I’ll say it here too.
He was able to recover somewhat (“somewhat” being the key word here) after the anti-Semitic/Sugartits incident a few years back because it appeared to be a one-off thing, he apologized to the right people and, let’s face it, folks say stupid shit when they’re drunk.
But racism and domestic abuse are a toxic combo for anyone in the public eye. The fact that he sounds like a genuine psycho on those tapes doesn’t help matters either (at least the former incident went unrecorded). A million prostrations before Jesse Jackson and NOW won’t save him this time, not least because any apology he makes this time around will be seen as less than sincere in light on this being the second time he’s been caught acting like a bigoted, misogynistic asshole.
If his next film is good, then people will go watch it. People like me dont give a shit about all the celebrity stuff in the background. If it is a great film, he will get critical acclaim and people will watch it.
Seriously, redeemed to who? Those involved in the cult of celebrity? Such as glossy, gossip magazines or MTV gossip shows? Personally, I dont think he gives a monkeys what they think of him.
(not into gossip, but hey I joined the site to respond to a spiritual question (Messianics and “trinity”) that I later found was closed by an opp cause they got tired of people sharing their thoughts and wanted to make it into a debate so I guess I’ll answer this chit chat gossip and then delete my account seeing as there is no substance at this site for me.)
All Mel would have to do to stay a commodity of Hollywood, would be to sell his real personality (character). If he would put some money into exspressing that he couldn’t care less what people think of him and mean it he would do fine. There are many who embrace that type outlook and vibe. Just look around the entertainment world. Honestly in todays society i doubt Mel’s social staus is hurting much. Honestly I find him very entertaining now. We all know the type that speak out of rage and ignorance.
I do take offense to his stereotypes of Jews, but if thats how he feels he has the right to voice it. It just shows his ignorance. I think his comment was something to the effect of: “Jews are responcible for all wars”…The fact is that the Spiritual war has been on and is always on. There are only few who take it upon themselves to stand up against it which causes conflict. The Word says those who Bless Israel shall be blessed, and those who Curse Israel shall be cursed!
As for the black issue, Some people just see the word n***** as so taboo that they like using it weather they dislike blacks or not. I thought it was creative and shocking that he said “a pack of n******” as if they were wild animals like dogs or something.
We all know race is only an issue for those who make it one. Perhaps Mel wants to live in hate and ignorance. Perhaps he will grow in time. Either way we sail our own ships. I respect those who decide not to support him, yet I’m sure he will find other ways of making money. Honestly i would be turned off to the public eye anyway
I don’t think it’s possible. He’s too old and his issues to large to take some time off and come back a changed man; he is, seemingly, able to present himself well enough generally that there wouldn’t really be any ability to tell he’d actually changed (until the next secret tape comes out). The best he can hope for is to be ignored, I think.
I’m thinking a live-TV special of him being stripped down, roughly attached to some beams, and violated in several ways while showing slo-mo high-def shots of his blood, sweat and tears dripping . I think this doesn’t violate current FCC rules, no?
