Anyone know what this means? I watched The Protector aka Tom yum goong, a martial arts type movie. I watched the movie on Mr Tarantino’s recommendation and it was a pretty cool movie.
On the DVD’s box it has Quentin Tarantino’s name in big letters. I actually thought he was involved as director/producer/whatever, but he actually played no part (that I could see) in the movie.
Anyone know what’s up with that? Any other movie advertising featuring the recommendation of someone?
Tarantino produced the American release. It’s not uncommon for movies to promote something as “From the producer of…” even though the producer essentially the business man and usually gives minimal input into the creative side of things. It’s just the same old trick of using the biggest name they can regardless of how involved they are.
I had heard that although Miramax held the rights to Ying xiong since 2002 they refused to release it domestically because there were no names attached. When QT agreed to the “Quentin Tarentino Presents” credit they released it, grossing over $50 million in the US.
Heh, Jet Li and Zhang Yimou weren’t enough of a draw? I guess that is the film that made Zhang Yimou popular here. But Jet Li was already a household name.
Well, until recently, it actually was kind of uncommon. You’d see the director referenced, but not since movies made in the day of David O. Selznick have I ever noticed the producer being used to “sell” a movie. (I put “sell” in quotes because while that’s their clear intention, to me it raises a red flag suggesting they were unable to find anything else to recommend the movie.) The first time I noticed it was when one of the, what, hundreds of producers of *Crash * (the crappy 2004 Oscar winner, not the brilliant 1996 Cronenberg film) used that diluted resume item to market another (demonstrably forgettable) film. Since then I’ve noticed it more and more. The semi-decent crime/cop movie *Harsh Times * was even brought to you by the “creator” of Training Day. Now, I couldn’t be arsed to go back and research the credits of Training Day, but I could pretty well swear there was no “creator” credited on that film. So it all gets pretty silly, if you ask me.
In the 1980s, studio execs sure liked to namedrop Steven Spielberg’s involvement with a movie even though his participation in many projects was solely as a producer.
Right; that was “presented by” Stephen Spielberg, based on his reputation as a director. This new thing is appending people’s names to a project based solely on their “reputation” as a producer.
