Presenting: The Most Vile Person Running for Office in the United States Today (R-Michigan)

“Only” implies that local elections don’t matter. Local elections is where idiots hone their craft and then move on to capture national seats. This is how we ended up with Sarah Palin on a presidential ticket.

They matter, sure. They just don’t have nearly as much of an impact. Objectively speaking, they don’t matter as much.

On an extremely local level (Seattle City Council) we have an actual Socialist who was elected. A member of the Socialist Alternative Party, a Marxist and Trotskyist organization. That’s not something that has happened at the state level, let alone national. I don’t see that happening in my lifetime, if ever. Yet it’s the sort of thing that the right is convinced is happening all over the country; many even suggest that anyone with a (D) after their name is an actual Socialist.

But no, it isn’t nearly as important. And how did Sarah Palin on a presidential ticket end up? The Republicans lost that election, and she was part of that.

It’s not something you ignore, but it’s also not something likely to affect anyone outside of Michigan, or maybe even this person’s district. Not in the short term, and in all likelihood not in the long term.

Do you consider governor’s races to be local elections, just because they aren’t federal offices?

State legislative elections aren’t local races. This guy isn’t going to just be legislating for his West Michigan district. He’s going to be part of the legislation process that decides Michigan’s voting laws, labor laws, environmental laws, etc. All of which either directly or indirectly affect the entire country.

The billboard writes itself.

I would care a great deal if he was going to be sitting on a school board. School boards have influence on what gets taught to the children.

(I wouldn’t want him in those other offices either. But school board seems particularly nasty.)

That’s where most of the eventual national politicians come from, though.

And redistricting happens on the state level; and can drastically affect who gets elected nationally.

Yes, I do. They don’t impact me directly unless I’m in that state. Relatively speaking, they are local. The term “local” is relative, obviously. It’s not an absolute descriptor by definition.

Again, I’m not saying elections below the national level don’t matter. They most certainly do. If nothing else, this past presidential election where many matters were handled at the state and county levels emphasize the importance. But they are objectively not as important. Again, not as important is not the same as not important.

And yet, a few years from now, he will be touted as the rational, bipartisan centrist of the (future) Republican party. Someone is going to have to out-do him in the race to the bottom.

At least he doesn’t have to worry about them getting pregnant. Because you know, if it’s legitimate rape the body has a way of shutting that down.

If I do, do I get 45 points?

I didn’t see any reference to a wife on his website. Gee, I wonder why.

I messaged him, both on his website and via e-mail, to ask him if he would lie back and enjoy it if HE got raped - “and don’t think you can’t, because you’re a guy.” If he responds, I’ll let y’all know what he said.

Not sure about a current wife, but he’s got an ex-wife, and two years ago, she made a statement on her Facebook page describing the kind of man he is:

I am heartbroken for my kids. I am posting ONE statement about our personal pain. I have spent years being silent about my kids’ dad in the name of protecting them. As a victim of abuse I realize that silence is permission to the abuser. Silence is permission for “Robert Regan” to continue to lie about his parenting and continue to gaslight his kids to further his political campaign. RJ has not financially supported his children in any way, he did not pay for college tuition/living expenses/weddings/court mandated health insurance, not one dime. He missed his daughter’s graduation due to the fact that he was in jail for drunk driving (and has no remorse). RJ has opposed therapy, been emotionally and verbally abusive and he owes people money. He told me in 2012: “I will hurt the kids to get your attention” Well he has my attention and I hope he has your attention as well- this isn’t a liberal/ conservative issue. This is a moral issue and a mental health issue. Is this the person you want making rules for you? I am asking him to please stop. Stop dragging the kids into this, stop with the abusive texts. Keep us all out of it.

Sounds like Trump’s kind of guy. An authoritarian tough guy that is above the rules and puts women in their place. And he understands that financial responsibility is for suckers,

See this is where librull outrage is misplaced.
That the GOP nominate this dangerous, outrageous malcontent is simply pragmatic real politick if there more than enough voters in the district who agree with and will elect the … sorry, can’t think of the appropriate descriptor

Just the practical application of the old sales dictum:
“When your customers want apples, sell 'em apples. If you don’t have apples buy oranges and paint 'em green.”

Back in 1990, Texas businessman Clayton Williams ran for governor against Democrat Ann Richards. Williams was a good-ole-boy’s good ole boy, and he was winning handily until he made a similar comment comparing Texas weather to rape. It cost him the election. I remember thinking at the time that it took something so offensive for a good ole boy to lose to a woman, and how we had a long way to go in society. Little did I know that that was going to be a high point for us. Now a good ole bro can make the same comment and still be favored to win his election because too many Republicans figure that a rape apologist is better than a Democrat.

As a recent newbie to Michigan (after 30 years in Texas) all I can say is, this whole thread makes me sick.

I would not believe this about the overwhelming majority of men. For him, I do.

That’s very near to my district and I swear every gop candidate out here is a fucking drooling major moron. I thought Peter Meijer at the very least would remain sane but he too blathers on adopting rw talking points in the same outraged and aggrieved manner about the atrocities committed by Dems and Biden. Afghanistan pullout, Clinton’s emails. On and on with the manipulative crap. I get he has to keep one foot deep in GOP shit while trying to appear rational and professional for the record. But he’s an asshole too.

And we keep getting those lame thrice over losers returning to run again and again. Fuck off John James, fuck off DeVos, so sick of the Republicans and their divisive fucking rhetoric.

Sounds vaguely dirty - would we have a bunch of little Afghanistan’s if Biden hadn’t pulled out?

Look how many more little Afghanistans we’d have if Putin hadn’t pulled out.

Oh wait a minute – just look at all the other places in the world where Putin inserts himself.

Leave it to the professionals for a safe pullout :relieved:
