Given that he is flush with cash and can command $100,000+ speaker fees whenever the occasion arises, has Bill Clinton financially assisted/reimbursed his many former White House staffers for the legal defense fees they ran up in the Monica Lewinsky fiasco?
Reimbursed? What make you think he’d do that? First of all, most of his costs were eaten by taxpayers. On top of that, how much do you expect from a guy that gains the highest office in the land, then screws the ugliest woman in that land? As for his dedication to the people, he actually wanted us to believe that he never touched her, going so far as questioning the meaning of basic words of the english language.
I wouldn’t hold my breath…
Clinton’s own defense costs were not paid for by the taxpayers.
ST1D, with all due respect, please stay focused and not have this thread thrown to the pit. The General Questions section is supposed to be as value-neutral and fact-driven as possible.
My question is simple: Clinton is on his way to becoming a wealthy man. During the ongoing Monica investigations, his White House staff ran up huge personal legal fees.
So, is Clinton helping them with their debt?
I recall necessarily vague hints while he was in office that he would try to help out on this matter, probably after he left office. But I was wondering that the other week, too, when the West Wing plot reminded me of it.
Many people donated to Clinton’s legal defense fund. He could use that money to help his staffers. That would not have been enough for every one. Some staffers would have paid their own lawyers. That’s part of being in politics. Many lawyers probably donated some of their time. Some could be written off as uncollectable debt.
I don’t think you can get the answer here. You might be able to find out about Nixon. That was long enough ago that everything should be paid off, not still owed.
I seem to recall that Clinton at some point pledged to do exactly this and was promptly reminded (admonished? I don’t remember) that it would be illegal/improper, because it would look like he were buying the testimony of his staffers.
Does someone have a better recollection of this?
manhattan, I think that would be correct, though I wasn’t able to find a cite. IANAL, but I think that it would fall under the rubric of “suborning perjury”. At the very least, I’m sure the House prosecutors would have tried to use that as a count in the Senate trial.
I know that with the book deal & speaking fees, Clinton has the potential to earn a lot of money. But has it been definitively established that he has earned enough money to pay his legal debts?
Can anyone here provide the exact amount that Clinton owes?
And does anyone here know what is exact income currently is?
Since this isn’t Great Debates, I won’t even go into who is ultimately responsible for his staffers legal fees; although an argument could be made that Ken Starr & team bear some of the burden…
