President Joe Biden and the runup to the 2024 election

I’d be shocked to learn that Eric Trump could pick up any portion of the MAGA crowd.

Lara, sure. But Eric? Nah.

I figured he’d be sympathetic to at least some part of the Incel Crowd. They’ll hate Don Jr. for being a “Chad”, and there’s no way they’d vote for a woman. But also-ran Eric looks just like them, and so they can fantasize that they’ll amount to something, someday, as well.

This would definitely be the smallest portion of the three, but that still cuts into the support the other two would need to undercut each other in the scramble to own MAGA.

Unless he looks like Alex Moffat, I have no idea what Eric Trump even looks like.

Like a less handsome Jake Busey, but without the style and charm.

Team, aren’t there enough threads about Trump? Why turn this into another one?

And I want a pony.
The U.S. Constitution, Article 2, Section 3
He shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient; he may, on extraordinary Occasions, convene both Houses, or either of them, and in Case of Disagreement between them, with Respect to the Time of Adjournment, he may adjourn them to such Time as he shall think proper…

Of course we all know that to the MAGATs the Constitution is simply an impediment keeping them from Saving the Country.

Moderating:

@JohnT is right: Let’s stop with the Trump hijack and get back to discussing Biden. Thanks.

ETA: I accidentally replied to @Love_Rhombus, but this is a general note to all who are going off topic. I’m not singling them out.

Will do. He’s like quicksand at times, but I will make a better effort to dodge the pits. Or something.

While the sentiment may have some support, as a matter of actual law, the President isn’t required to deliver the State of the Union as an address in the House chambers. There is generally a detailed report that is always presented to Congress as a form of ‘status report’ on the nation, and the speech portion is more of a tradition than actual requirement. The last time there was no accompanying speech was during Jimmy Carter’s administration, and the first time it was given as an actual speech was just over a century ago. It is a matter of convention that he is extended an invitation to the House to present it as a speech.

That said, not to invite the President to give a State of the Union address in the House would be a breech of what is now tradition and to do so for merely political posturing rather than an acute emergency might not have the effect Johnson wants. Biden isn’t the one who is going to look bad or embarrassed if he sent a letter and instead addressed the nation on TV to explain why things are different this year. It’s free license to advertise to the nation that he’s the grown-up in the room

Also, Congressional Republicans wouldn’t be able to heckle if he didn’t address them in person.

I’m betting Johnson can’t wait to tear his hard copy of the SoU in two as did Pelosi that one time.

I don’t think there is anything that would stop Biden from delivering the State of the Union to just the Senate. If Biden could spin it right, it would make the republicans look like the children, and that the grownups over here are talking while the children are too busy lobbing insults.

I just learned that you can buy untearable paper. That would be pretty damn hilarious.

George Washington presented his first annual message required under Art II, Sec 3 as a speech to a joint session of Congress.

The last two times Dems went to war against their President, we got Nixon and Reagan. This time we KNOW we will get Trump, so, really, what are people doing?

Ah, true. Fair enough. I guess that should really be amended to read that it has been just over a century when the practice of giving an address to Congress was made a (mostly) regular practice.

What do you mean by “went to war against” ?

All I’m seeing is support with reservations.

Biden’s appearance on Seth Meyer’s show is up on YouTube.

It’s more obvious than ever that he’s no orater, and he’s definitely lost a portion of his hard-won control of his stutter as he’s aged you have to be wilfully biased to watch him and conclude that he’s senile.

I especially liked the line that it’s not about the age of the candidate, but the age of their ideas. Certainly prepped beforehand but still good.

What a good dude. God bless President Biden.

Yep, I was really happy with this appearance. Hopefully he can make more on other shows as we get closer to the election. It’s obvious he is an older man but he still has it together mentally.
