He doesn’t stand a chance.

Who? Clinton or Obama?
Nice to see I had my finger firmly on the pulse of America back in 2006…
The black one.
Clinton.

I’m going to disagree with the consensus of the thread–I think Obama has a real shot at both the nomination and the Presidency itself in '08. I think, if he runs a masterful primary campaign, with careful attention to the details of the nomination process, he could take the nomination, probably from Hillary Clinton, who would likely be his chief rival for the nomination. (She might be offered a high position in his administration; maybe not the Vice Presidency but, say, Secretary of State). I think continued disillusionment with the war in Iraq could play a factor in Obama being elected, but even more so, the major economic crisis this country and the whole world is heading for–there are some huge structural problems with the global financial system out there folks–which will definitely be in play by November ‘08. If the Republicans nominate someone who can be convincingly portrayed as being out of touch with voters’ economic fears (which they frankly are likely to do) Obama could secure the Presidency easily–potentially over 350 Electoral votes.
I do fear that, once in office, he could prove surprisingly centrist (as well as hawkish on foreign policy) and perhaps vulnerable to being outmaneuvered by the Republicans in Congress, especially if they really dig in their heels and pursue a policy of total obstructionism. And I foresee this coming recession as being much more serious and intractable than most people are going to anticipate.
Now I just need to figure out how to hack the board software to fiddle with the date stamps, and I’ll make millions off my politics newsletter!
A worthwhile resurrection, and a reminder to us all that prognostication is rarely worth a solitary fuck in a supercluster.
Everyone knows that the US is not ready for Black president. Maybe someday way, way in the future, but not now. We’ll have a female president before a Black president.
There were a few pretty good posts, but most were so far off-base they were risible. Reading the whole thread reminded me of the stopped clock that is correct twice a day.
But in retrospect maybe those people who suggested he serve at least one senate term and then get some executive experience as governor of Illinois in order to run against President Perry who succeeded President Clinton would not have been bad advice.
