I read the most interesting obit in the Times that I’ve seen in quite a while. The grandson of John Tyler, the first VP to become president on the death of a president, just died at 95. The grandson is Lyon Tyler.
Since the Times is paywalled here is the USA Today obit.
John Tyler was born in 1790, just a year after George Washington took office.
Even scarier - Lyon has a younger brother, who is still alive.
Even scarier
It always strikes me that the USA is a surprisingly young nation. It’s only about the age of three 80-year olds put end on end.
Stolen from another website and not fact-checked by me:
One of the two living grandsons of the 10th President of the U.S. John Tyler (1790-1862) passed away on September 25th. It’s crazy how both Tyler and his son, Lyon Gardiner Tyler (1853-1935) perpetuated this by fathering children at 63 and 72 years, respectively. The surviving son, Harrison Ruffin Tyler, was born in 1928, meaning that LGT fathered him at 75.
Fascinating!
It said in the Times that this family was already well-known for being long lived, and for having children late in life.
I wonder if some grandchild out there now is named Lazarus Long.
That would be silly…Because his given name is Woodrow Wilson Smith.
