Prevalence of unprotected gay sex

According to this article sexually active gay men are 13 times as likely to be infected with MRSA, a drug resistant strain of a potentially deadly bacteria, than heterosexuals. The article also states

Incidence of MRSA is rising along with the resurgence of syphilis, rectal gonorrhea, and new HIV infections partly because of changes in beliefs about the severity of HIV and an increase in risky behaviors, such as illicit drug use and having sex that abrades the skin, Diep’s team wrote.

Considering how AIDS swept through the gay community and pushed the idea of safe sex to the front I can’t understand why anyone would engage in such potentially dangerous behavior. So my question is just how common is it for gay men to engage in unprotected sex? I don’t mean within a stable monogamous relationship but in the single scene (is it still called “cruising”?).
