Prey

Anyone else playing this? It launched yesterday and is by the same folks behind Dishonoured 2.

I’m a few hours in and right now it’s definitely Bioshock on a space station - which is a good thing, especially if you liked that series (which I did).

Looks cool but I just don’t have the $60 lying around right now. I’ll have to wait for a sale.

I’m hoping to get it, but I’m afraid it’ll just laugh at my antique computer.

Can’t wait to play it. There are sadly so few Sci-Fi games on Xbox One. I’ll wait for it until the price drops to about $30 (used, ebay) though. I never buy games immediately, for the price and because I wait for some updates/patches to get released to fix inevitable issues. Same reason why I only got an Xbox One about 5 months ago, its been updated and fixed up enough.

Prey looks immensely promising, and if it’s anything like OP said, I’ll be in heaven. I loved Bioshock. Especially Infinite.

So it’s System Shock?

Sort of, but the architecture in the space station is very reminiscent of Rapture - a sort of retro-Art Deco style; it feels a lot like a conscious reference to Bioshock rather than an “Art Deco is cool!” thing.

Also, the themes of modifying yourself with questionable, body horror-inducing Science! are closer to Bioshock than System Shock, IMHO.

I’m very interested in playing it. It looks beautiful, I like the gameplay style, and I really like the critter gimmick I’ve seen. It seems to have lots of potential.

Unfortunately, my gaming machine has deteriorated to the point that I’m sure Prey would crash it instantly. As of today, it’s even BSODding on Yooka-Laylee, so I’m not making much headway on my Steam backlog. I’m going to have to invest in a new rig before I can try any new games. Meanwhile, I’m resisting the temptation to watch YouTubers play any more of it.

It’s pretty great. I’m about 80% through.

Wondering if my purist neuromod playthrough is going to have an affect. It’ll be fun to play through again and let loose on the “other” mods!

Or Dead Space.

I’m going to end up with a 9.0 out of 10.

I really liked it. The story was great and it competently avoided most traps that could have dragged it down. However, the ending epilogue kind of kicked itself in the ankles while it was running the victory lap. I liked the summarization bit, but not where they took it after that.

The combat was good. Mimics were a great idea well executed. Other enemy types were good, too, thought frequently a bit too bullet-spongey. Telepaths were super annoying in a bad way. Hitting things with the wrench felt good in the start, but too weak against later enemies. Would have liked more upgrade paths for it to make it a more viable option in the lategame. (Like an electro-upgrade to deal with Operators.) Pretty much every gun was useful and balanced, but there was definitely an unfilled niche for a single-shot weapon, like a rifle.

I opted out entirely of the “other” talents path and I’m looking forward to going back to the game for a full replay.

I’d recommend this to anyone who liked Bioshock and Deus Ex. It’s not going to be as big as Bioshock was; it doesn’t have the punch for that. But I’d actually take it against Bioshock 2 or Bioshock Infinite!

well:

It’ll keep the turrets on your side, at least. Supposedly 3 of the special mods and they recognize you as an enemy. Odd that a knapsack full of enemy bits don’t show up on their scanners, though…

The very beginning is brilliant, and worth seeing at least. Even if you don’t plan to play the game.

I do wish the crew listing was better designed.

I checked at System Requirements Lab, and it says that in order for it to run, I’d need a better CPU, and in order for it to be fun, I’ll need more memory. Replacing the motherboard/CPU/RAM was my next upgrade, so that’s on the menu.

GPU requirements are usually more representative of what you actually need than CPU requirements. If you have a 4 core CPU that can run above 2.5-3GHz and 8GB of RAM, you should be fine.

Can anyone who has a CPU worse than an i5-2400 3.1GHz / AMD FX-8320 confirm that the game runs fine for them?

I wouldn’t go by what System Requirement Labs says. Nor even what their requirements say.

There are always a ton of both written performance reviews of new PC games, in addition to video ones. You can google for the former, and I’d wager that if you enter Prey + your GPU + your CPU you’ll get at least a few hits for the latter.

What are your actual specs?

It’s not a hugely graphics intensive game (they’re good-but-not-great, even by my standards where I’m happy with 1080p resolution) and there’s not usually a lot happening on screen at any given time, IME so far.

I’ve got an Asus tower with an AMD Phenom II X6 1035T 2.6 GHz, 8 gb ram, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4gb. Reviews seem to think the GPU’s fine but the CPU’s a little behind the times.

Sounds pretty cool. I enjoyed Bioshock but didn’t finish it (not unusual for me). I’m playing through the Uncharted series at the moment but might get in to Prey when I either finish or get bored with them. Probably the latter as I’m finding Uncharted 2 to be a little disappointing compared to the first one.

Yeah your GPU is just fine, not so sure about your CPU. If this was a DX 12/Vulkan title I’d say you’re probably good.

However, we do live in the age of digital game refunds. You can always pick it up on Steam and if it doesn’t run well, refund it.

Um, aside from being “space horror,” those two games are about as unlike as I can imagine. One’s a relatively cerebral RPG, the other is pretty much an ordinary FPS shooter. Prey is closer to which one?

Well, technically I should have clarified System Shock 2, which is the actual RPG-like thing and was the inspiration for Bioshock.

System Shock 1 was really just an FPS.

(I’m thinking you were also thinking SS2.)
