My local electricity provider sent out this flyer recently. We now have the option of locking into a fixed kwh rate if we choose our supplier by the end of December. If not, we are by default signed up for a variable rate. I have no idea if this fixed price option is a good deal, but maybe someone out there knows?
Yes, it really depends. From your location, I’ll assume you’re in the 'states; this page has a map of 2003 rates per-state. (Probably still fairly accurate, but not exact).
If you’re thinking of plans, look at a gas/electricity bundle. I pay 7-8c /kWh, but my parents pay 6.xc after they bundled it with their gas in some payment plan that keeps payments similar all year.
Not only does it depend on state, but it varies wildly on location within a state in most places. Price comparisons are totally meaningless unless people know exactly where you live.
It will depend entirely on the rates in your city and the rates you would/might pay at the variable rate.
In Austin, we pay 7.82c / kWh during the summer on the kWhs after the 500th. It’s 6.02c in the winter, and the first 500 kWh are 3.55c per all year round. So not only are your rates a rip-off to me, so is the average rate in Texas according to the link above.
