Prince Chalres and Camilla

(Forgive me if this was already covered, I have been travelling.)

So Chuck is going to marry Camilla. Ok, I am fine with that. My only question is what the heck do we call a tux with red lapels? Why was Chuck wearing that outfit in last week’s news footage?

Is that what we call a Master of Ceremonies outfit? If so, why was the P of W wearing one?

WAG…I think it might be the formal uniform of his regiment or something.

No military badges and whatnot. Looked just like a (very well-fitted) tux to me.

Looks like a bellhop uniform from a German hotel, circa early 1960s.

Question is: Does Charles have to carry the bag?

One gentle weekend bump, then I will let this die.

It is not often I can stump the Dopers!

I assumed that it was some sort of cutesy lovers’ thing. Camilla was wearing a red dress, so they matched. I think this is the photo to which the OP is referring.

I seem to recall another instance where they did the same thing-- Charles’ vest matched Camilla’s dress, and my foggy, faulty mind insists it was sort of a lavender color. This might be what I was thinking of. They seem to like this matching thing.

Sounds like it could be Mess Dress. An officer and a gentleman dresses for dinner, don’tchaknow.

The mess uniform or mess dress is essentially a military tuxedo meant for formal but non-duty occasions. Patterns vary wildly by unit, and it sounds like the one Charles is wearing will be more muted than most.

Many of the senior officers (Colonel+) in my branch have and wear them at our mess dinners.

He may attempt to carry her across the threshold, but there’s no actual rule about it AFAIK.

It’s the evening dress version of a ‘Windsor uniform’, the style of court dress designed by George III in 1779 for male members of the Royal Family while staying at Windsor Castle. The everyday version is no longer used, but they still use this version for black tie events at Windsor.
