Prince Harry targeted by the Taliban

Prince Harry targeted by the Taliban
Why and how did his location become known to the general public? I thought they had a media blackout on his location in 2008, so how come the Taliban knows where he is stationed at now?
Also is this really worth the increased risk to US and Englands military by having him there?

Getting the enemy to come out of hiding and attack your forces is not always a bad thing, tactically speaking.

If he is even there. Crying wolf, in that sense, seems a great tactic.

I was gonna say this. It would surprise me if he was even there, except for maybe the photo ops to make people think he is.

They’ve been looking for the kind of infiltrators and traitors that have led to green-on-blue attacks, and what better way than to beef up security and surveillance and give them some irresistible bait to draw them out?

I mean, you know how the Taliban type like young boys. They’ve probably all seen Harry’s naked ass by now, so they’ll be falling all over themselves to try and kidnap him! It’s brilliant!

I’m no royalist but I can’t imagine for a second that he’d let his name be used in that way. I’m trying to think how the press and British public would receive the news of deaths caused by such a trick. He’ll be mobile anyway so all the military have to do is say nothing and his whereabouts will be as fluid as all the other Apache pilots.

Ultimately though he has put his neck on the line in combat and will be doing so again, perhaps right now but certainly very soon. I say good luck to him, I don’t care about his background when he is on the battlefield I’m sure he is every bit as professional and dedicated as the other pilots.

I thought I read that the British government purposely let his location be known to the public. Not sure how, though.

I heard this morning that British authorities said it would be impossible to keep his whereabouts secret. They tried once before and it didn’t work so maybe they gave up trying.

Valid point.

I know the last time there was valid concern for Prince Harry’s comrades. He’s such a ripe target that anyone near by is in more danger.

A bit like escorting Pam Anderson through San Quentin in a bikini. The odds of making it out alive aren’t very good.

“Green-on-blue” attacks?

Afghan troops/police on Coalition.

That brings up a good point. How would you protect the prince from rouge Afghan troops/police? I’m pretty sure they are on all the bases. Our entire strategy involves working with and training Afghan forces.

Exposing him to any Afghan with a gun would be a big risk. It seems like the most trusted Afghans are the ones that have successfully turned on our troops.

I doubt he has much contact with them in his duties as a pilot/weapons officer in an Apache. Elsewhere I guess it’ll be down to body armour and his protection officers.

Don’t take what you read about the Ginger Prince too seriously. There is a huge PR exercise taking place to rehabilitate the image of young H, from a lush to Prince Valiant. Expect heroic tales of daring-do from the British Army and Buck House over the next few months.

With mascara, eyeliner and high heeled shoes?

This.

No way is this a stunt with him not really there. He wouldn’t go for it and the risk of it coming out would be way too great. As to the OP, his arrival was announced as there was no way to keep it secret. I assume the judgement was that as an Apache pilot the risks were acceptable. The Taliban have never succeeded in shooting down an attack helicopter and if they did the chances of them capturing him alive are very slim (this was the real worry when he was with the ground troops as a forward air controller). Green on blue attacks are not a problem as he won’t be in close proximity to armed Afgans - these attacks are mostly on trainers or troops co-located with Afgan forces. Risks to other coalition forces are not really increased - the attack on Camp Bastion must have been planned for ages and can’t have been thrown together since Harry’s arrival.

Why would I be wearing a bikini while escorting Pam Anderson anywhere? I look much better in a suit.

It would not surprise me one bit to find out that he already knew he was going back out and was letting off steam before he did. Just as squaddies the world over do (but at a slightly lower level of spending)
And he has been there before. He has been involved in action. His military career isn’t a sham nor merely a PR exercise. The two princes may have riches and privilege untold but both seem to appreciate that and in taking up their respective careers they have chosen to put themselves in situations where privilege can’t protect them and so they are on our level.

As I say, I’m not a fan of the royal family but I applaud the fact that they put their son’s in harms way just as thousands of others do.

If somebody should wear pajamas I’d prefer it to be Anderson. How that will happen I’ll never know.

They’re obviously just trying to eliminate the younger son to avoid a war of succession upon Elizabeth’s death. Sure, England hasn’t had one for a few hundred years, but that just means they’re due!
