Did she forget to curtsy to the Queen?
Speaking of whom, I saw HM stand silently during the anthem. But I suppose it would be a bit off for her to sing “God Save Me”.

Sheesh, tough crowd!
It was too early for ME to want to be hollered at, even by a passionate preacher.
And I’m not blaming anyone, just saying it was not to my taste.
The preacher was a bit over the top, but he was sweet and likeable, and he got his message across. Everyone seemed amused rather than offended.
They’re wearing artificial poppies, which are used in Commonwealth countries to commemorate those who died in war. The photo is from the recent Anzac Day event.
I can’t make out what the white tag is, but I’d guess it’s a logo attached to the poppy. Meghan’s has it too, it’s just partially obscured by her hair.
They are wearing poppies on their lapels. This is almost obligatory in the UK for any public figure close to Remembrance Day.
The tags are non-standard, but probably have the name of a charity. If you look closely, Meghan’s poppy also has a tag, partly hidden by her hair.
Edited to add: Almost a duplicate of WotNot’s post. Sorry!
Here in Finland the commentators of the local broadcast absolutely loved him and considered him a breath of fresh air.
Always nice to have confirmation! ![]()
Looks like the tag is most likely the emblem of the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services Association.
Yes, well, the sun never sets on the (former) British Empire, right? Between India and North American that could easily be half the audience.
I didn’t watch the ceremony, don’t care enough to sit through it, but the fashion angle is in my wheelhouse. I think the dress was very appropriate, and I am glad she went the understated route.
It’s not the first time or even particularly groundbreaking, many European aristocratic brides have “plain” dresses by current American standards. I would venture to say that the crowd who thinks what they see on “Say Yes to the Dress” is the height of couture and sophistication will say her dress was blah. Meghan’s dress puts me in mind of an updated version of Princess Margaret’s.
For head gear, I was thinking she might do what Sarah Ferguson did, go in with flowers, come out in a tiara. There isn’t much left to admire about Sarah Ferguson anymore, I but I did like that symbolism of going in a commoner and coming out a titled royal. The art deco look of the Queen Mary bandeau was a nice choice. I am also really, really glad she didn’t wear the Spencer tiara, that is too associated with Diana.
And speaking of Diana, I get that her shadow looms large over this whole affair, but I am sick to my back teeth with all the articles about everything, all this and this and that and that are all somehow “secret” tributes to her.
Diana was just Diana, and her impact won’t fade for quite some time, but every little thing Kate and Meghan do does not need to be compared to her. The clickbait articles of “10 Times Duchess Kate Paid Tribute to Diana’s Fashion!” all because she wore tartan or polka dots are a bit much, but it does show Diana still sells.
I know Diana’s wedding dress has become a love/hate thing for some people, but it was perfect for that moment in time, on that girl. And somehow, despite the weight and volume of it (and everything she was taking on), that huge confection of a dress did not wear the girl, she wore the hell out of it, something only 19-year old virginal Diana could do, imho.
The only quibble I have with Meghan’s dress is that I don’t think she should have gone with stark white. She’s divorced and it is a religious ceremony. She should have leaned towards cream/ivory.
I have to go with the folks saying the preacher dialed it back quite a bit, and mostly likely because he was in Britain. That is a subdued sermon by the standards of many Americans!
Several of the guests were smiling, and Prince William seemed to be trying not to laugh.
I also think Duchess Kate’s dress & coat were too pale, unfortunately for her. They are clearly yellow, but such a pale yellow that her ensemble is reading as white or cream in the sunshine. So she is getting dragged on twitter for being an attention whore and upstaging the bride, and the press is running with it. It is creating a rivalry narrative in the press that I am fairly sure doesn’t exist.
Thank you, WotNot and GreenWyvern!
I do recall, now, seeing references in various British books to people buying/wearing poppies, but I’d never seen a photo of them.
Same in the UK, mostly. I thought this was a really lovely wedding to be honest, with the music selections being perfectly judged. The Handel when Meghan walked into the church was an utterly beautiful moment, and you can’t beat a bit of Leiber and Stoller or Etta James either. If the scuttlebutt is true, and the music was selected by Prince Charles and Meghan herself, then they really aced it.
Americans don’t ‘curtsy’ to the Queen, or any other foreign leader. They are not British subjects, and curtsy and bowing shows submission to foreign leaders.
Amal Clooney had a helluva nerve wearing that hideous egg-yolk yellow getup - good thing she won’t be in any wedding pictures, all ‘lookit me! lookit ME!’
I thought the dress, tiara, and veil were all just stunning. The utter simplicity and elegance of the dress, I know, is hard for some to parse, but it was just wonderful, sculptural, understated, and again, elegant. The veil, hand-embroidered, was breathtaking, I love a long, long veil. The tiara? Nothing to say except O.M.G. The bridal bouquet was small and understated enough, hard to tell what it was made of. I heard Harry had hand-picked some forget-me-nots from their garden to put in, in tribute to Diana. The only thing I wasn’t impressed with was her ring. I don’t care for that cushion cut, an Asscher cut or emerald cut is far prettier IMO. Harry looked splendid, the rest of the party looked lovely (though I think cream/white for attendants and flower people is kind of dull, she wouldn’t of course go all ‘gaudy’ with teal or fuschia!)
I caught a few minutes this morning (it was almost impossible to avoid if you had the TV on), and the one thing that really impressed my was ERII standing and watching. Is she the healthiest 100-year-old around or what? I see that she is “only” 92, but still. Good for her!
Well, except when they do.
Y’know, George was never going to marry you anyway…
As my friend put it ‘ they should have allowed him fire or love but not both’
Lovely ceremony, lovely couple, lovely weather!
I like Mrs Clooney’s dress; she looked like a sun goddess.

I woke up at a disgustingly-early time to see the wedding, and of course it was top item on both the CBC and CTV. I must be a hopeless romantic inside this dented shell, because something like this always seems to me to be a brave stab from a grey world in the direction of love and bright colours and hope. What a beautiful day!
Then I went back to sleep and woke up to a damp gloomy day in Peterborough and assholes driving vehicles that are too loud and contentious politics and all the troubles of the world. Bother.
Edit: during the long speech I went and made tea.
