Prince William to marry

It’s been on the cards for a while and today it’s been announced that Prince William is to marry Kate Middleton next year.

Should be a good bash. I’m hoping it there will be a bank holiday in honour of the occasion!

(nice to get a free day off)

They seem like a nice couple.

I’m not looking forward to the insane royal wedding tourists in town though. Here’s hoping they have the ceremony in Balmoral.

Charles and Di was a bank holiday wasn’t it? Hopefully that tradition will continue. Good luck to them.

Squeeeeeeee! A royal wedding! Ohboyohboyohboy! (Yes, I know there was one a few years ago, but…) And yeah, Balmoral would be great!

The wedding’s going to be in London, apparently, so I’m opening bets on St Paul’s vs Westminster Abbey.

I, for one, despite by left-leaning tendencies, am very excited at the prospect of a big old bit of pomp, and very happy that Kate is a commoner like the rest of us. I DREAD the constant moaning that will now start about the cost, but it’s about time we had something nice to look forward to, instead of a steady stream of budget cuts and job losses.

What’s Kate Middleton like, does anyone know? She seems nice enough, but I’ve only seen photos. Is she a snob, or generally pretty decent?

May they have a nice, happy, long marriage, with nothing more tabloidy than “OMG, Kate hasn’t returned to a completely flat stomach three months after having her baby! Oh noes!!!”.

Charles was the heir to the throne (and still is) I wonder if we will get the same for #2 getting married?

Good point. It’d be good PR I reckon.

He’s not #2 in the same sense that Andrew was before he was born, though - unless Charles died without issue, or was removed from the chain of succession, Andrew was never going to get the throne. William will, although his father will get it first, barring tragedy, a sudden upswing of republicanism, or someone getting disowned.

William is heir too, albeit one step removed, plus he’s by far the Royals’ biggest PR asset (after HM, obviously), so it would make perfect sense.

They’re already talking about how nice ‘Queen Kate’ sounds.

As I recall, Diana’s father vouched for her virginity before she married Charles. Is that even an issue anymore? I hope we’ve all moved past that sort of thinking.

Can the royals marry commoners and have their children be in line for the throne? Or does Kate have some royal blood that I haven’t read about?

they’ve been going out for 8 years. How big a liar is he rfather anyway??

I don’t know how accurate this is, but she’s been nicknamed “Waity Katie” because apparently she hasn’t done much in the last eight years except wait around for William to propose. A few years ago she worked for a brief time as a buyer for a clothing chain, but I’m not sure if she presently has a job.

I haven’t heard anything about her being a snob. She seems like a perfectly nice, if somewhat boring, person. She should fit in with the royal family quite well.

They’ve been together for 8 years, and live together, so I imagine they’ve had sex.

Yes. Lady Diana Spencer was a commoner, albeit one from a very old aristocratic family. (Technically, Prince William is a commoner, as silly as that sounds)

If she does it’s not recent.

Okay, I’m officially sick of it. The BBC seem to have launched Operation Royal Glurge and are already talking non-stop about the history of their relationship and Kate’s “troubled post-university years”. At the moment they’re interviewing the Prime Minister about it, and there’s a “William and Kate” program on television tonight.

Cue an entire freaking year of tabloid and tabloidesque gibberish. Plus The Daily Express is probably going to go dig up the corpse of Diana and put her on display outside their offices. Again.

Already sick of it? They only announced the news less than 3 hours ago.

People will go overboard a bit on it over the next few months but it’s nice to have some good news for a change.

And an extra holiday! It seems that the general consensus is that there will be a public holiday. Even if they weren’t planning on one I bet they will now.

Ostensibly she works for her parents’ business, which is a party and event supply company, but whether she actually does anything or ever shows up is unlikely.

Congratulations to them!

Granted I don’t know them. I don’t know anyone who knows them. I’ll never meet anyone who has ever or who will ever know them. Its not like I’m getting an invite or that they’re registered at MACYs.
Doesn’t mean I don’t wish them well, though.

(Can I wish them privacy too? Is that ok?)

I’m stoked. I can’t wait to see the wedding. I think it’s awesome that the royal family is… you know… doing something wholesome. Since I was born in 1980, I really can’t remember the last time that happened.
