[QUOTE=Prince’s sister, Tyka Nelson]
“The standout piece for me is his orange Cloud guitar,” the publication quoted Nelson as saying. “It is strange because people always associate the color purple with Prince, but his favorite color was actually orange.”

Amusing. If true, then he sure used purple brilliantly to support his brand.
*I never meant to cause you any sorrow
I never meant to cause you any pain
I only wanted to one time to see you laughing
I only wanted to see you
Laughing in the orange rain
Orange rain, orange rain
Orange rain, orange rain
Orange rain, orange rain
I only wanted to see you
Bathing in the orange rain*
I mean, I guess it could work, but it kinda doesn’t feel the same.
I could certainly see the if it were the case (and I’ve wondered about this) where he did something that associated him with purple (was Purple Rain the first time he was assocaited with it?). The general public put it together and he ran with it.
There’s certainly no denying that in addition to his music ability, he understood marketing…or at least how to give the people what they wanted (while also satisfying his own needs and wants).
IOW, if it’s true, I can see it as plausible. Purple Rain comes out, people decide that it’s his favorite color, he makes it his ‘theme’. From a marketing standpoint, it sure makes sense. When you see something purple, you think of Prince, to a certain extent anyways.
It is widely reported almost nothing rhymes with ‘Orange’ other than ‘Sporange’ (a very rare alternative form of sporangium, a botanical term for a part of a fern or similar plant). He choose ‘Purple’ as a favourite colour so he would have more rhymes available.
To his credit he didn’t choose ‘Blue’ so it could have been worse I suppose.
I have found a lot of images of Prince on stage wearing orange. But purple tends to be the most common in promotional material. In the end, it doesn’t matter what his favourite is, Purple Rain itself is enough justification to associate the colour with him.
