Printable Discs For Inkject Printers: Really? Uh, How Exactly?

I bought some new DVD discs from Fujifilm that claim to be printable discs for inkjet printers.

Now, I don’t know how your printers are set up, but mine feeds paper under and then pulls up and turns and spits out over.

The discs don’t look flexible to make that turn on the feeders.

So am I missing something, or how in the hell am I supposed to stuff a disc in my printer to label?

(BTW: This is not a deal breaker as I have nice, adhesive paper labels that do the trick quite well. I was just wondering how this printable disc thing is supposed to work in printers.)

I imagine some inkjets can print things without them going through a roller. I used to have a laser printer that could do envelopes and card stock that way.

The printer has to support it. This Epson model is one such printer.

Yeah, a lot of printers have a tray in the back that you can flip down, making the path more-or-less straight. Helps with stiffer cardboard, and apparently CDs.

BTW, there’s a cool new technology called lightscribe where you flip your CD upside-down, put it back in the burner, and the laser can write this hologramatic-looking label on it for you. Not that it applies here, but that’s the first thing I thought of when I read “Printable Discs”

You have to have a specialized printer. Epson makes one that has a tray you slide into the bottom and the printer pulls it through and prints on the disc.

Linky-linky

You need a CD printer.

:: sigh :: the evils of multiple tabs on the SDMB compounded with not previewing

The downsides are that you have to buy special discs and the written part will fade eventually.

Lightscribe FAQ

inkjet printable CDs can looks really good - We used them (DVDs actually) when we distributed an amateur movie a while back. The printers typically have a special carriage that feeds through the paper path in a straight line. The results can be made to look as good as a professional factory-printed disc.

Unless you handle them with damp fingers, in which case it’s a disaster, although some printers have an extra ‘ink’ tank and print head, delivering a clear glossy coating, which I think is a bit more durable.

Thank you all!

So in other words, it should say “Printable Discs for some, not all inkjet printers.”

That makes sense.

Glad I didn’t try what I was thinking of trying. That would have been a bad thing.
Oh, and Lightscribe looks kinda cool.

What’s wrong with adhesive labels?
