I finally gave in and installed OS X 10.2, and so far not too many problems. The main one I’m still struggling with is that I can’t get Quark, running in Classic, to access my Epson Color 1160 inkjet printer, which is connected via Appletalk. OS X sees it just fine, and Cocoa/Carbon applications seem to be all able to see it, but not Quark. Any suggestions on things I could try or am missing? Thanks a bunch in advance.
This might seem obvious, but it might be so obvious you missed it: make sure the printer driver extension is booting up with classic. The cocoa/carbon apps are seeing the printer through OSX, but Quark needs to see it completely through OS9, so if the OS9 driver isn’t loaded through classic, it won’t work.
I would assume that OS 9 is seeing it, but how do I tell? As far as I know, OS X is accessing the OS 9 setup that I had been using, which used the printer with no problems. I also downloaded and installed the OS X driver for the printer, which finally allowed OS X to see the printer, btu that didn’t change the Quark problem. How can I find out if OS 9 is able to use the printer while I’m still in OS X?
Yeah, it should be the same set up you had before installing OSX. But to make sure, open up the System Preferences of OSX, open up the Classic pane, then click on the “Advanced” tab. On the pop-up menu of Startup Options, select “Open Extensions Manager”. Then click the Start Classic button (or restart, if it’s already running). Extensions Manager will open on boot. Make sure the printer driver is checked.
If it is, and it still doesn’t work, it could be just a conflict with Quark and Classic, or the printer and Classic. Try printing under another non-OSX program, and see if that works.
I have an Epson printer, but not the one you have, and I don’t have Quark, so I can’t test it out on my machine. But I have gotten my printer to work through other programs via Classic, I’m pretty sure (it’s been a while since I’ve needed to).
