I believe the two of you are talking about completely different tunnels. Harry shows up in Hogsmeade directly after the Weasley twins give him the map - via the tunnel that goes straight to Hogsmeade. n_t is talking about the tunnel underneath the Whomping Willow that leads to the Shrieking Shack.
If that was the case then it is even easier. Harry and Hermione saw Sirius (as dog) take Ron to that tunnel and followed… whereever it may lead.

In regards to the tunnel under the willow, besides just seeing Sirius drag Ron down the tunnel, there is nothing saying that Harry didn’t see that tunnel while he was studying the map.
It’s always a fair assumption to say that if they didn’t mention it or show it, it didn’t happen. But the fact that they even said, “Now where’s this go to?” would add further evidence to the fact that it wasn’t on the map.
Who was it that said that? Book or movie?
As counter to that, I would say that in the movie Harry said something like, “I think I know where this goes.” Getting an idea from the map would have been the most likely way for him to have known. Also, Sirius and Lupin both know of the tunnel and helped create the map.

I saw the dog in the cup too, but thats because I expected to see it, I think if anyone saw that scene again, and looked for the grim in the cup, then they would see it too.
No, I was just really looking forward to seeing Pig at the end of the movie, twittering and zooming around the train carriage. I get a kick out of Pig. Hopefully they bring him in for the next movie. Regarding Crookshanks and Sirius, in the book there’s a scene where:Harry wakes up in the middle of the night and goes to look out the window, where he sees Crookshanks being all palsy-walsy with a big black dog (Sirius, although Harry doesn’t know it at the time). Later, when he and Hermione are trying to get past the Whomping Willow to follow Ron, Crookshanks runs up and presses a knothole on the trunk, freezing the branches so they can get by. And once in the Shrieking Shack, when Harry has Sirius at wand-point, Crookshanks jumps on Sirius’s chest and refuses to move.
I didn’t like how they handled the tunnel under the tree in the movie. In the book, it’s very carefully explained why the tunnel is there, why it leads to the Shack, and why the Whomping Willow is placed over the entrance.
The tunnel and Shack were built the year Lupin first came to Hogwarts, so that he could get off the grounds and be hidden somewhere secure every month when the moon was full. The Willow was placed over the entrance to stop other students from trying to get in. In the book, when the Weasleys gave Harry the map, they point out that the tunnel goes towards Hogsmeade, but they don’t think it’s ever been used because the Whomping Willow is right over the entrance.
I think a slower pacing and a longer running time would have improved this movie greatly, but it’s pretty darn good as it is, and I suppose tweenagers - at whom the movie is aimed - might find a four hour movie a bit hard to sit still for. Slightly OT, does anyone have an inkling when Rowling is going to publish the next book already?
The sixth book is due next summer, AFAIK.
Does anyone know the name of the swing music Professor Lupin plays while they’re tackling the boggart? It was also used on The X-Files at the climax of the episode “Triangle” (Mulder gets lost in a time warp on a luxury ship).
Did it sound like a tango? I don’t have sound capability at work, but the IMDB’s soundtrack listing includes “La Cumparsita”.
IIRC (wasn’t paying close attention), it was Benny Goodman’s “Sing Sing Sing”.

Saw it yesterday, finally! Enjoyed it and loved the new look of Hogwarts (that bridge was great, and I can hardly wait to see the Durmstrang ship arise out of that lake). Thought Emma Watson was esp. brilliant, Daniel pretty damn good himself, and Rupert a bit more expressive (although the Ron in my mind is a lot more cheerful than the perpetually worried-looking Grint). Adored Lupin and Sirius, once he calmed down. Thought we needed more Maggie Smith, although I don’t think her character has a lot to do in the book, and more new Dumbledore. Draco’s wussiness was too emphasized here–gotta keep Draco a serious villain–and no luscious Lucius for the ladies?? Another fun game of “Spot the Famous British Actor!” played during the movie–it’s like the Reno 911! of fantasy films.
I also wished they had elucidated a little more about the four friends who had made the Map, and although I suppose a full explanation in Movie 4 is OK, I don’t think that it made sense for the Stag to appear like that and have Harry link it to his father–in the context of the movie, why on earth would he do that? Would have also been cool to see it charge forward and toss the Dementors aside with its giant antlers. Stags don’t quite have the same mystical power associations here as they do in Europe, but at least they didn’t Americanize the books so much that James appeared to Harry as a Really Big Buck or a Humungous Bull Moose 
The credits were cute; I sat through all 100,000 names so I could bring the SDMB this stuff, so read up:
[SPOILER]The feet changed a few times, and did tricks–there was one point when the map went by the girl’s bathroom (hey, no Moaning Myrtle this time) that the feet got small and dainty. At the Hippogriff’s FX team credit we saw the front tracks of claws and the back tracks of hooves for a sec. When they scrolled by the Owlery there were owl claw tracks everywhere, strutting around–some of them ran to the windows and then disappeared as the owls “flew out”, and some just appeared as the owls landed on their little feet. At another point human tracks turned into dog prints–Padfoot’s or Moony’s, I don’t know–and ran off the screen. When the company that made the titles got their credit, the feet ran to the name and jumped up and down a few times, making themselves look like exclamation points. At at the very end they all came together and stood in a circle around the WB logo or something IIRC.
And for the final moment, the logo of the movie appeared again, and you heard Radcliffe say “Mischief managed” and the logo faded away–but not before he waited a beat and said “NOT!”[/SPOILER]
I’ll try to catch it again. I am so looking forward to Four, which is so far my favorite book–the World Cup, the Veelas, the magickal teams from “Germany” and “France”, more Weasleys, Cho Chang and Cedric, the big and terrifying fight at the end, etc.

I just saw it today, and I have to say I came away a bit disappointed. As most of you mentioned, the emotional impact of the story is almost totally lost when the friendship between Lupin, Sirius, Pettigrew and James Potter and their shared hatred of Snape and the reason for the Whomping Willow and Shrieking Shack are not mentioned.
What I can’t believe is that none of you mentioned the scene that did not make it over from the book which I thought was the most upsettig omission. I was so looking forward to the Quidditch game when Malfoy and his buddies dress up as dementors with the intention to scare Harry, and Harry lets his Patronus loose on them. I was not happy to not see Malfoy get his comeuppance. (no, the punch from Hermione doesn’t count)
While the plot of the movie follows the plot of the book, I felt like there’s way too much significant that’s missing, and that doesn’t fill me with optimism for the movie versions of Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix, which are even longer. While Prisoner of Azkaban is my favorite of the first three books (Goblet of Fire is my favorite overall), I think Chamber of Secrets is my favorite of the first three films.
Knowing the Geek Quotient here, did anyone else find themselves translating the latin scrawled on the map during the credits? I managed to find “maraudere est videre” written at least a half-dozen times, along with “omnibus” but wasn’t able to make out even the letters, let alone the words of most of the rest of it.

cmkeller – as sturmhauke pointed out, I totally agree with you that the Malfoy as a dementor scene shouldn’t have been left out, and said so earlier. It was comical; it shows parts of the Harry-Draco feud; demonstrates their character; and shows that he’s gradually (rather than suddenly) learning that charm. It’s one of the few cases where it is worth putting a Quidditch game in, because it materially affects the rest of the story.
Thanks for reminding me about Crouch’s name – I stand corrected. Obviously, I shouldn’t try to type some of the odd names from memory.
(TANGENT ALERT: And speaking of odd names – I started rereading Book 4 last night, and found that Mundungus Fletcher (whose name I’ve also probably got wrong) was mentioned in a throwaway line near the beginning of the book. I didn’t remember that when I previously read book 5.)
