Pro/College/High School Teams as "Leopards" or "Cheetahs"

Lots of sports teams with Tigers in the nickname: Detroit, Auburn, Grambling LSU, Clemson, Missouri etc.

“Lions” and "Panthers"are well represented: Detroit, Penn St and Pitt, Carolina

Jacksonville has the “Jaguars”

There is the Vermont Catamounts and Charlotte Bobcats.

But I can’t think of any sports teams that are the “Leopards” or the “Cheetahs”. What about other cats like Lynx and Pumas?

There was once a minor league baseball team in Canada called the Ottawa Lynx. The professional basketball team for London in the UK SuperLeague is known as the London Leopards. And there’s a Super 14 Rugby club known as the Central (South Africa) Cheetahs.

For obvious reasons I don’t think “Cheetahs” would be a popular sports name in the US, especially in Boston!

We have a Panther Creek high school but they are the catamounts. There are a lot of cougar teams such as BYU and Houston.

I give you the Minnesota Lynx of the WNBA, the Lafayette College Leopards, and the St. Joseph’s College Pumas. There’s also the Puma shoe company. If Wikipedia is correct, cougars, catamounts, and pumas are all the same animal. The category would also include Penn State’s nittany (mountain) lion. I don’t see any cheetahs and I think Duke explained why.

What about the Leopards?
