I’m a grad student, and this semester i’m a TA for a course on The American West, 1800-1940. I’m also responsible for updating the course website with images, guides, links, etc. Each week, during his lectures, the professor uses a Powerpoint presentation to outline some of the main points and to present additional information in the form of images, maps, etc. We have decided to make the Powerpoint files available on the website after the lectures, so that students can go back over previous lectures and see the graphics and the main points. There isn’t enough info in the presentations to replace the lectures; they are just designed as a supplement.
Anyway, those who use Powerpoint will know that there is an option in the file menu to save your Powerpoint presentation as an html file. It’s a very straigtforward process, and allows the presentation to be viewed in a browser like Explorer. I thought that i’d offer the students two options for each presenation–they could download the Powerpoint file, or watch the presentation as an html file.
Well, i converted the Powerpoint files to html, and checked them out on my computer, and everything was hunky dory. But then i uploaded them all to the server and encountered a problem. Now, when i view the html files, in place of all the bullets and the em-dashes in the Powerpoint presentation, there is nothing but question marks.
The files are all on a WebCT server, so i’m assuming that it’s WebCT that is causing this problem, because i had no such hassles when viewing the html files on my local computer. I know i could go through the code for each individual page in the html files and fix the problems, but this seems like a pretty laborious taks. Does anyone know any other way that i can prevent this from happening?
