So, I’m home from college for awhile. My father has cable internet with a wireless router. His high-speed internet works fine. I pick up the signal fine as well. However, when I connect to the wireless signal, I constantly get the “limited or no connectivity” logo and message. I know for a fact that it is not my wireless card since I can connect to other wireless signals without a problem. What is the problem here?!
You may want to check the security on the router (MAC addy filtering, WEP etc.).
Honestly, I’m new to the wireless router situation and I have no idea what that means. can you please shed a bit of light on how I can do that?
It’s not completely clear from your original post whether your connection works even with the “limited or no connectivity” logo and message displayed. If it does, then it’s just an innocuous, although annoying, message and you can turn it off following these steps. If you’re not getting a connection, then it’s more complicated. Check out the suggestions here and here to fix the problem.
Tough one - that depends on the router make and model in question.
I’d suggest you check against your father’s PC setup first - is he using DHCP or has he configured a static IP ? (Open a command prompt and type “ipconfig /all” to check IP setup.) Check the settings on his wireless connection, as well.
Most wireless routers these days are configured via a web interface, so if you go to a working PC on the net and type the IP address of the default gateway (very often 192.168.1.1, but it’s configurable), you should get a configuration screen. I can’t really guide you from there, though - and it may not be recommendable to start mocking around in the router unless you’re pretty sure of things.
Not much help, am I ?
I must say, I am still incredibly lost. (By the way, I’m using dial-up)
The router is a netgear router. It is security enabled but I typed the correct password. I am able to connect but given the message “Limited or no connectivity” and I am still not able to browse the net. there is that little triangular symbol over the wireless icon on the desktop tray. Under network connection details I am able to view
Physical Address:
IP Address:
Subnet Mask
for the wireless network connection
But not-
Default Gateway:
DNS Server:
WINS Server:
What are the next steps that I should take?
