Problem with Word

I have a new computer with the latest version of Microsoft Office installed. Until two days ago it worked fine but since yesterday, the “Save As” function no longer works. The system hangs and I have to do control/alt/delete to get control again. I can’t create new documents from old ones. On Tuesday I installed a new scanner. Any ideas how to fix this problem?

Do you have an Anti-virus such as Norton installed that may be blocking Word?

Do you have other applications where “save as” works correctly?

Could be that your normal.dot is corrupted. Word uses the “normal.dot” document template every time it opens - unless you tell it to use a different template for a document, all your documents are based off of normal.dot. This template holds all the formatting information you might be familiar with, as well as any macros, customizations, or operating instructions, and it’s possible that something’s caused it to go wonky. No worries, tho’ - it’s easy to fix.

Do a search for normal.dot. When you find it, give it a new name - something like normal_old.dot. Then restart Word - it’ll generate a brand new (and hopefully corruption-free) normal.dot in the same location. If that fixes the problem, you’re golden! After it’s all working as you like, then you can delete the normal_old.dot file if you’d like (keeping it won’t do any harm).

If you’ve got macros and such stored in the old normal.dot, you’ll have to add them again to the new one. A better practice is to create a new template .dot file and add them there, then tell Word to use that template when you create a doc.

I think this is a problem related to a recent update. Details here:

I’ve fixed one like this today.
