Problems reading The Dope on my droid

Hey, is anyone else having this problem? I’m no longer able to read The Dope on my LG Slider Android phone. It stays open very briefly, but then closes itself. I’ve turned my phone on and off and taken the battery out.

It doesn’t matter if I use the bookmark on my phone or enter the url directly into Google search. I also followed a link from a notification email and that worked for awhile but then BLOOP, closed.

I’m not having this problem on any other site. This started two weeks ago or so.

I have unlimited data on my plan.

Not really sure why that’s happening, but have you tried using Tapatalk? The interface is much better on a phone anyway.

hey, ive been having this problem too. i downloaded firefox which solved the crashing but brings its own problems. it wont recognize my shift or fn toggle, which is why this post is all lower case and missing some punctuation. i dont normally write like this, i swear. also, posts on the board alternate between being really huge and normal sized.

it doesnt crash at least, but, yeesh.

I’ve had my Galaxy Note 2 for about 6 months, and I love it. I use whichever is the native browser and keyboard.

I guess it was about 2 weeks ago that I had problems similar to the OP, but it just went away by itself after a day or so. Otherwise, no problems (other than the fact that typing is a real pain, but that’s everywhere on the droid, not just SD.)

Trust me on this one - get Opera **Mini **Browser from the Play store. (There’s a regular Opera browser, but in your case, make sure to get the Mini.) The LG Slider is quite an old, and now underpowered phone, and although the site itself might not be very demanding, the ads can be, and they’re probably what your phone/browser combo is choking on. The way Opera Mini browser works is that all the processing and rendering takes place “in the cloud” on Opera’s servers, then sends the resulting, pre-rendered webpages to your phone, saving it a lot of overhead that it might be having trouble processing.

Also, Opera seems to play very nice with displaying the Dope’s layout, and it zooms in while properly reflowing the text to fit the screen. It works so well, it makes TapaTalk largely unnecessary. My phone can run pretty much any full-fledged browser without issue, but I still use Opera Mini exclusively for reading and posting on the Dope. The only minor issue I’ve seen is that it usually doesn’t display italics, for some reason. No biggie.

The other option is to root your phone and flash a ROM, which is rather easy on that phone, and vastly better than stock. That way, you can run an adblocker, like AdAway. I did this all for a friend’s Optimus Slider and it was pretty easy. I recommend flashing both the Gellato ROM and GingerKernel.

I forgot to mention that the other thing about the Opera Mini browser is that it has a very small memory footprint. I know the space on your phone is very limited (I hope you’re already using something like App2SD to move stuff to the SD card!), but it will take up very little of your precious memory.

Thanks for the tip on the Opera Mini; it’s a lot better than my phone’s native browser and Firefox.

You’re welcome, glad to help.

Now, if you’re like me, go into Opera Mini’s settings and turn off the Navigation Bar. When you want it to come up, you can just hit the “menu” button, and that way it doesn’t always hog space on the screen. I also set my “Font Size” to medium, and under “Advanced”, I turn on the “Exit”
button.

Ahhh, smooth and snappy Dope browsing! And I also love the little “quick scroll” up/down arrow that appears when you flick to scroll, since I have the Dope set to display 100 posts per page, otherwise it would take forever to scroll a whole page.

Hey, so sorry that it’s taken me so long to get back to this thread. voltaire, your suggestion worked perfectly. I was sitting outside a Dairy Queen the other night, downloaded Opera Mini and ta-da! Problem solved.

Awesome. Thank you.

Glad to have helped! Now spread the word: **Opera is dope on the Dope! **
