Problems with AOL and an SB4200 SURFboard Cable Modem

i have an SB4200 SURFboard cable modem (as pictured here. when i turn on the modem, all the lights which say power, receive, send, online, and activity are supposed to come on; and when i turn it off, standby is supposed to light up. but today, when i tried to turn on the modem, only the power and receive lights come on; and when i turn it off, those 2 lights stay on and standby stays off.

this has happened once before when my mom disconnetced the modem, but we’ve check all the wires, and they are connected properly. my mom even cleaned all the connections with duster. so, what’s wrong with my modem (i’m actually renting it which is worse.); and how can i fix it?

Try disconnecting the modem from the power. Wait a bit and plug it back in so that it reboots. What OS are you using, if XP then you could also try renewing the IP address on the computer. XP How TO

Is the modem plugged into a power strip? If so try plugging it directly into the wall. Sometimes plugging cable modems into a strip causes problems.

huh. that’s weird. maybe, but everything else in the system is plugged into the strip too. actually, i’m not sure i can do that without an extension cord.
